The subdivisions of Melite constitute four types of administrative divisions, each of them varying in their level of autonomy, in the framework of a federal, Christian, semi-presidential republic. These are an Autonomous City (Dominica) serving as the capital of Melite, the 6 states (which are the primary polity of Melite), and a Special Administrative Region. Former subdivisions include the 7 Districts before their elevation to State, and the two military commissariats, Melitian Dilu and Northern Rhodesia.

History

Democratic Communist Republic of 11B

The first republic, started in a secondary school in Santa Venera, Malta (present Leoni District). The Republic consisted only of a secondary class with no administrative divisions of the sort.

Christian Republic

In the Christian Republic period, Melite was divided into 8 districts (including the Autonomous City), a Special Administrative Region, and a Military Commissariat. The districts and the SAR were regulated by the District Act of 2022,[1] and the Treaty of Dominica,[2] respectively, though the Military Commissariat was not never regulated, neither by the Constitution nor an Act of Parliament, or the Federalisation and Vice President of Melite Act of 2022, even until both Commissariat's abolishment.

Christian Federation

The idea of federalisation was always present in Melite, either when communist, or as a unitary republic. In a multi-question poll held by the Electoral Commission of Melite, the question "Would you approve of a Federal Melite?", gave out a soup of reactions, with the responses indicating a level of skepticism on the subject. Of the 12 responders, 58.3% answered "Maybe", 33.3% (four responders) "Yes", and 8.3% (one responder) said no.[3] However it is unclear whether this survey was consulted when planning the Bill on Federalisation and Vice President of Melite, 2022. The Bill was tabled by Thomas Jacobs, an MP from then-District of Melincia, and passed by a margin of 4 in favour, and two against, with 6 Members of Parliament abstaining, or absent.[4]
