Arcadia, officially the Republic of Arcadia, is a self-proclaimed republic and micronation located in the Pacific Northwest region of North America. Arcadia was founded in 2024, with its constitution being ratified in November 2024. Arcadia’s capital and largest city is known as Jewel City. It claims to be a sovereign Republic, but lacks recognition from the United Nations or the government of any sovereign state.[1]
The government of Arcadia is governed as a Presidential republic, with its president as its head of state and government, assisted by the vice president. The highest and only legislative body is the General Assembly of Arcadia, which is also the highest judical body. It can be described as a dictatorship due to Arcadia having no set elections and the president having significant control over the government.
With Arcadia being a micronation, it’s foreign policy is focused on diplomacy with other micronations along with recognizing other Macronations and independence movements. Independence is not currently seen as a large priority by the government of Agraria. The nation currently has a population of 5 permanent residents that live in its territory, with more non-residential citizens living outside of the country.
Etymology
The word "Arcadia" is defined a very pleasant and quiet place or scene[2], and the term is commonly associated with nature. The nations founder and first president was inspired to name the country "Arcadia" after a park that he had visited. Citizens of Arcadia are known as Arcadians.
History
Pre-Arcadia history
The first humans would inhabit the area where modern-day Arcadia sits around 15,000 to 10,000 years ago. The groups that would inhabit Arcadia are known as the Northern Kalapuya and Clatsop peoples. They were the earliest known groups to settle the area, and would inhabit the area exclusively until the arrival of Europeans to the area beginning in the 18th and 19th centuries.
European settlement of the area began with the Spanish expeditions to the pacific northwest beginning as early as 1543. European trappers and explorers would reach the area around the 18th and 19th centuries. The region, now known by the Americans as Oregon Country would see contested claims by the British and Americans. Eventually, it would be fully Incorporated into America as the state of Oregon in 1859. Disease would harshly impact the native population, going from thousands of inhabitants down to only hundreds.
Early Micronations
Arcadia’s founder would first learn about micronationalism sometime between 2020-2021, after this, he began to look into the Molossia and was inspired to start his own micronation. The nation would be named the Doggoist Republic of Lavander. Lavender would eventually become defunct by the end of the summer and mostly forgotten. The memory of another nation also exists, however it is presumed fictional. The only memory is its blue, white, and blue tricolor flag and its land claim near the Pacific Ocean.
Founding of Arcadia
In early 2024, A.B would rediscover micronationalism, which would lead him to found a new nation, called the Federation of Somerset, on 23 March 2024. This date is still officially regarded as Arcadias national day, and is an official holiday. Despite what the name suggested, the nation did not operate under a federal system of government. The nation would go through many name changes, being known as Heceta, the Oregon Republic, and Agraria. In mid-July 2024, the nation would attempt to run as a constitutional monarchy, but would return back to a republic on 23 July 2024. The country would officially be known as the Republic of Arcadia by November 2024.
