At the time Secundomia was officially known as the "Micronational Republic," a placeholder title as the country voted on a name. "Republic of Secundomia" reflects the common and popular name at the time, which soon became official |
The Halstopian Coup d'état was a micronational conflict in Secundomia. Although referred to by contemporary sources as a coup, the conflict was more accurately an insurgency of American citizens living in the Secundomian state of Halstopia. This was an early defeat for the Secundomian nation and helped set the tone of instability during Secundomia's foundation period. In the aftermath of the conflict, state leader H founded the nation of Voitokas, carefully keeping it secret from the forces that overthrew Halstopia.
Background
In December 2009, Parker I and Spencer I founded a micronation that was soon to be named the Republic of Secundomia. In the search to recruit citizens, Parker invited friends to join the country via email. H of Halstopia was among the first to reply. He quickly founded his own state, created a flag and established himself as an active member of the country. Despite his early activity, there were signs of potential instability in the air.
Causes of the conflict
Parker and H were close friends at the time, but they had long standing friction. The largest friction was political. Parker was an outspoken conservative while H was proudly liberal. Their families also held these beliefs. American citizens in Halstopia were also strongly liberal and disapproved of the two's friendship. As frictions had previously gotten high enough to enforce email blocks, these citizens were wary of a new nation. Further, these Americans were suspicious of the motivations behind a secessionist micronation and worried about the legal implications.
Conflict
Shortly after Halstopia joined the Republic, Americans in the area found out about the project. 3 mercenaries lead by S.R. quickly overwhelmed the H, who was the only Secundomian stationed in the area. By the time Co-Consuls Parker and Spencer were notified of the conflict, Halstopia had already been forcefully disestablished and they were unable to mount a military response. S.R. banned H from joining any micronations under the threat of further violence.
Aftermath
Halstopian Response
Shortly after the conflict, H announced he still intended to run for president of Secundomia as a non-citizen under the Eutopian Party. At the time, there was citizenship requirement for the office of president. Prior to the December 2009 Secundomian Elections, the Co-Consulate approved a constitution that affirmed a citizenship requirement and H's bid was ruled illegal.
Shortly after, H reinstated his email block on Parker I and founded the nation of Voitokas. H kept this secret from the American citizens living in the area and further took extreme steps to clarify the simulationist character of the nation in the Voitokan constitution. The secretive nature of Voitokas kept the two nations from ever establishing contact, but Secundomia conducted an espionage project to keep tabs on Voitokas. As Voitokas faded from activity, H eventually left micronationalism altogether.
Secundomian Response
In response to the coup and also an external threat of conflict from the nation of Galla, members of the Secundomian public including Luke of Secundomia criticized the slow and inept response from the Consulate. Co-Consuls set about creating a constitution that would establish more stability in the nation. In addition, they began constructing the Secundomian Military to respond to conflicts with more speed and force. Seth I was nominally put in charge of defense operations, however the military would not officially be founded until February of 2010.
