The April 2022 Chamber of Representatives election was the first elections to the Chamber of Representatives, the lower house of the newly created National Assembly of Roscamistan. The Chamber of Representatives’ minimum number of seats was 16. The United Party of Roscamistan was the first to announce it would run, later to be followed by Proletarian Democracy on 16 February 2022, and other parties until 10 April 2022.
Background
On 2 February 2022, the Reichstag was abolished in Executive Order 42.[1] The Order also specified a new body, the bicameral National Assembly be created in its place. The Chamber of Representatives was one of the two houses that were created for the bicameral National Assembly, the other being the Senate. President Thomas Jacobs decided that the Chamber was to have its elections before the Senate.
Election methods
The Chamber is elected by a proportional representation system, with people for party lists in one national constituency. The amount of seats specified was 16 seats.
Parties participating in the elections
- United Party of Roscamistan - The then registered party in Roscamistan with the most members, to put forward 10 candidates on its list. Proposed abolishing the ex officio representative status given to the First Secretary of State.
- Proletarian Democracy - the second most influential party in Roscamistan, first since the foundation of the United Party. Proposed democratic socialism in Roscamistan.
- Livable Roscamistan - Led by Renzo Wessels, unknown whether will gain a seat or not.
- National Party of Roscamistan - Conservative party in Roscamistan, led by Rafe Burfield, and most likely to ally with the United Party of Roscamistan.
Results
Early into voting, the polls showed the United Party behind Proletarian Democracy, later in the afternoon gaining back to get ahead by a plurality. The smaller parties, the Nationals-Solidarity alliance, the Green Liberals and Livable Roscamistan gained votes as well. It became apparent that the Nationals would ally with the United Party, while the Green Liberals and possibly Livable would ally with Proletarian Democracy.
After the polls closed before midnight GMT on 18 April 2022, with 12 votes, 50% of the vote and 8 seats, the United Party gained its biggest victory since the election of Doros Patusky in the February 2022 Roscamistan presidential election. Another surprise was that, despite having only 20.8% of the vote and being in second place, Proletarian Democracy had its entire list of five people, including Esty Carpentieri elected to the Chamber, which resulted in Carpentieri being recognised as Minority Leader of the Chamber. The National Party-Christian Solidarity Alliance gained two seats, and allied with the United Party to put them into the Majority Caucus. Ludwig Collins was later recognised as Majority Leader in an acting capacity after he was elected to the Chamber. Livable Roscamistan elected its only member to the Chamber, joining the minority caucus. The Green Liberals failed to elect anyone, as they failed to meet the legal threshold.
