Elected President

Alexandre Olivier
Georgienstine First

The 2023 Georgienstinian presidential election was held on 18 July 2023, with a second round on 1 August. As no candidate won a majority in the first round, a runoff election between the top two candidates, Alexandre Olivier and Nicolas Caiazzo, was held on 1 August 2023. Voters reelected Majority Leader Alexandre Olivier and his vice-presidential nominee, former Speaker of the National Congress Roy Jackson with 57.7% of the vote, while Minority Leader Nicolas Caiazzo and his vice-presidential nominee congressman Chet Chetson received 42.3% of the vote.

On 30 April 2023, incumbent President Raphaël Olivier announced he would not seek re-election for a fourth term as President of Georgienstine. The upcoming Georgienstine First presidential primary was a tight race between Vice President Ali Farrokhzad and Majority Leader Alexandre Olivier, with Olivier coming out on top with 71% of GF voters voting for him.

Nicolas Caiazzo was the obvious favourite for the Left Bloc nomination, following Ben Olson’s retirement from politics following the 2022 Georgienstinian presidential election, and selected congressman Chet Chetson as vice president candidate.

The campaign saw a high number of minor candidates, most notably Andrew Perdomo of the Christian Democrats, who led a faction of anti-Olivier conservatives, garnering 11.5% of the vote in the first round, enough for third. The Christian Democrats ran a coalition with the National Guard for the Workers of Georgienstine, led by controversial politician Thomas Jacobs, however, the alliance fell apart following the first round. Other candidates include Labour-Democratic Party leader Sullivan Matthews, who gained a small push of support near the end of the campaign, and perennial independent candidates Silas Wurnbash and Renzo Wessels.

Olivier and Jackson were sworn in on 21 August 2023.

New states

This presidential election will be the first to be held after the admission of the state of Marksburg.

Candidates

Georgienstine First

Raphaël Olivier of Georgienstine First is the incumbent president, and has repeatedly announced his intention to run for re-election, while also claiming he was still considering whether to run or not. Multiple elected officials from his party have encouraged him to run.

In 2022, Olivier, who Georgienstine First nominated, received 58.6% of the vote in the first round and was therefore re-elected as president. Vice President Ali Farrokhzad stated that he would support Olivier if he runs for re-election, but would run to succeed him if he does not, making him a clear frontrunner if Olivier were to retire. Many prominent Georgienstine First politicians encouraged Olivier to run and he received numerous endorsements.

On 30 April 2023, at 6:02 PM, Olivier announced that he would not be running in the next election but would finish his term as president. Shortly after Olivier's announcement, at 9:12 PM, Vice President Farrokhzad announced his candidacy. One day later, on 1 May 2023, Majority Leader and Olivier's brother Alexandre Olivier announced his candidacy. Most GF politicians remained neutral, with the exception of Roy Jackson, who gave an early endorsement to Farrokhzad, which he quickly withdrew.

On 1 May 2023, a poll by the GNC among GF members showed Olivier at 67%, Farrokhzad at 33% and a hypothetical Jackson candidacy at 0%. On 8 May 2023, a new poll showed Olivier at 80% and Farrokhzad at 20%.

Throughout the campaign, the Farrokhzad campaign was very active, releasing numerous posters, whereas the Olivier campaign was not, though both candidates participated in a "debate" organized by the party.

The primary date was delayed to 28 May 2023. Olivier defeated Farrokhzad, receiving 71.4% of the vote to his opponent's 28.6%. Olivier received 4 delegates and Farrokhzad received 2. Many GF politicians, including Ali Farrokhzad, Roy Jackson and President Raphaël Olivier endorsed Olivier.

On 7 July 2023, Olivier announced former speaker Roy Jackson as his running mate.

On 16 July 2023, Olivier and Jackson were both nominated by the GF National Convention's delegates behind closed doors. 4 delegates voted for Olivier and Jackson, whereas 2 delegate seats remained vacant as Farrokhzad announced that his 2 delegate seats would not be filled.

Left Bloc

On 7 August 2022, the Free Democrats were renamed to the Left Bloc, in an attempt to address their nominee Benjamin Olson's disappointing election results. In 2022, the party ran former Minority Leader and nominee in the 2020 and 2021 elections Benjamin Pickles, who received 31.0% of the vote in the first and sole round. Prior to the election results being announced, Pickles announced that he would not run again in 2023 if he lost.

On 31 December 2022, Pickles' running mate in 2022 and incumbent Minority Leader Nicolas Caiazzo, who had been perceived as the front-runner for the nomination by the media, announced his candidacy for president, registering his candidacy with the FEC on the following day.

On 22 April 2023, Caiazzo announced congressman Chet Chetson as his running mate. Caiazzo revealed that he had considered 5 other individuals for the spot, Joe Terronez, governor Esty Carpentieri, congressman Saionji Kiyohira, congressman Dante Winchester-Thanos, and governor Ludwig Collins. He also stated that he had narrowed down his pick to Chetson and Kiyohira.

On 23 April 2023, Caiazzo became the party's presumptive nominee, winning 100.0% of the vote and 7 votes. Caiazzo was allocated every delegate to the Left Bloc National Convention, but the number is unknown.

On 16 July 2023, Caiazzo and Chetson were nominated by the Left Bloc National Convention's delegates. Caiazzo received the votes of 4 delegates, a majority, and a motion was then passed to unanimously nominate him.

General election campaign

First round

The first round campaign has been described as inactive by many political commentators, with few candidates holding any events or publishing any posters in an attempt to gain votes.

The Olivier/Jackson campaign has been accused of being inactive and dormant, releasing few posters and holding no events during the campaign. Months before the election, posters in support of a potential re-election bid for president Raphaël Olivier were published and many posters were also published during the GF presidential primary campaign, but none after May 2023. During the primary campaign, Majority Leader Olivier had been accused by his primary opponent Vice President Ali Farrokhzad of being inactive. The GF National Convention was planned for July 13th but was not held due to a power outage in mainland Georgienstine. Instead, Olivier and Jackson were nominated behind closed doors. Olivier's campaign has been roughly associated with support of the status quo and continuation of the nominee's brother President Raphaël Olivier's policies and governing style. Alexandre has been described by many as more moderate than his brother.

The Caiazzo/Chetson campaign was also accused of being inactive and dormant, releasing no posters and holding one event during the campaign. Since Caiazzo announced his bid much earlier than his opponents, posters in favour of it were released months before the election, but none after April 2023. Caiazzo held one event during the campaign, which was the Left Bloc National Convention on July 16th, but no speeches were delivered. The Caiazzo campaign has been roughly associated with opposition to the governing administration, though Andrew Perdomo has criticized this label, claiming his bid represents the "true opposition" to Olivier and GF.

The Perdomo/Jacobs and Matthews/Toast campaigns were also inactive, publishing few posters and holding no events. With Thomas Jacobs ending his presidential campaign and endorsing Perdomo, the ticket received much more attention nationwide. The Perdomo campaign has roughly been associated with being a third voice and a new alternative to GF than the traditional left-wing parties, such as the Left Bloc. The Matthews campaign was announced very late and not much is known about it. However, Matthews, who has been very controversial as governor of Raphaelistan, has promised to work to change the public perception of him.

The media originally portrayed the race as being between Olivier and Caiazzo, with the uncertainty of there being a second round. However, in the final days, with Jacobs ending his presidential campaign and endorsing Perdomo, Perdomo was portrayed as a major candidate and invited to the presidential debate. Matthews was also portrayed as a major candidate and invited to the presidential debate when he announced his candidacy.

The big question on election day was whether there would be a second round or if Olivier would win in the first round. The final GNC prediction had Olivier at 45%, meaning a runoff was predicted to happen. In addition, a GNC poll showed that 70% of respondents believed a runoff would happen.

Second round

The second round campaign has been described as much more active by many political commentators, with the Olivier and Caiazzo campaigns both publishing posters.

After the first round, Andrew Perdomo endorsed Nicolas Caiazzo and Sullivan Matthews endorsed Alexandre Olivier. Perdomo's support of Caiazzo was criticized by his own running mate Thomas Jacobs, who ended his party, the NGWG's alliance with the Christian Democrats, Perdomo's party. Despite both candidates making endorsements, their base were seen as tossup voters.

The Olivier campaign was described as much more active in the second round and more active than the Caiazzo campaign. The campaign published numerous posters in support of their candidate. These posters used the Georgienstinian national colours of white and magenta and covered bipartisan themes, such as bipartisanship, the nominees forming a "strong team" and "continuing going forward". The campaign put much emphasis on continuance and carrying on, pointing out how GF had governed for the past three years, in which Georgienstine grew significantly. President Raphaël Olivier took a much bigger role in the campaign during the second round, being responsible for many of the posters and the messaging. After the results of the first round, he stated: "I'm coming back to the campaign trail for one last dance".

Speaker Matthew Tonna published his own posters in support of Olivier that were unaffiliated with the Olivier campaign. These posters were said to be much more partisan, attacking Caiazzo for having communist beliefs (though he has stated that he does not believe in communism on the micronational scale) and attacking Andrew Perdomo for endorsing Caiazzo and joining the Vision Georgienstine alliance.

The Caiazzo campaign was also described as more active than in the first round but was less active than the Olivier campaign. A supporter of the campaign published one poster in favour of the Caiazzo/Chetson ticket. After the first round results, the campaign put much emphasis on running a bipartisan administration and how they would not implement socialism or communism in Georgienstine, as Caiazzo opposed implementing these ideologies on a micronational scale. During the campaign, the Left Bloc removed socialism and the far-left label from its official ideologies list. Caiazzo was forced to leave the campaign trail on July 21st due to a trip until August 3rd, after the election, and stated that his allies would run a surrogate campaign in his place, though it is unclear who will replace him as the main spokesperson.

A debate was proposed, but as Caiazzo will miss most of the campaign, Olivier will likely debate an unknown surrogate representing the Caiazzo campaign.

Party conventions

The Georgienstine First National Convention was to be held on July 13th in Castel but was cancelled due to a power outage in mainland Georgienstine. Instead, Olivier and Jackson were nominated by the GF National Convention's delegates behind closed doors

The Left Bloc National Convention was held on July 16th, where Caiazzo and Chetson were nominated by the Left Bloc National Convention's delegates.

The Labour Democratic Party National Convention was to be held on July 14th but was reported to July 17th. However, they have already nominated their nominee Sullivan Matthews.

Debates

The Commission on Presidential and Vice Presidential Debates has planned to host a presidential debate and potentially a vice presidential debate during the first round campaign.

Qualification of candidates

In order to qualify for the CPVPD-sponsored debates, presidential candidates have to meet the following criteria; vice-presidential candidates qualify by being the running mate of a qualifying presidential candidate:

  • Be constitutionally eligible to hold the presidency.
  • Appear on the ballot.
  • Have a running mate.
  • Either:
    • be nominated by a political party with representation in the National Congress.
    • have at least 10% in a GNC prediction

Aftermath

After the results were announced, Olivier and Jackson were congratulated by numerous Georgienstinian public officials. His opponent Nicolas Caiazzo notably did not concede or comment on the election results in any way. Olivier and Jackson were sworn in and took office on 21 August 2023.
