The Kingdom of Dresmia, commonly known as Dresmia, is a self-declared sovereign state, also known as a micronation, located in Europe. Dresmia claims sovereignty over an uninhabited Welsh island. The state declared independence from the United Kingdom on 20 August 2024, being founded by King Luke I. Since its formation, Dresmia has been ruled by an absolute monarchy.

The Dresmian government is centred around the monarch, who holds absolute power, and their court. The royal household and privy council both play an important role in aiding the monarch in their role. There are quasi-democratic elements to the government system, and appointments to and promotions in the government are highly meritocratic. The monarchy itself is hereditary.

History

Dresmia was founded on 20 August 2024 with the ratification of the independence declaration. The state was established by King Luke I, who authored the declaration and issued royal assent to it to ratify it. Dresmia was founded to be a successionist state built on the principles of Godliness, justice and freedom of speech after concerns that the British government under Keir Starmer was failing to adequately uphold these values.

Since the establishment of the kingdom, the government has been consistently adhering to "medium secessionism" - aiming to become a legitimate nation while also recognising the fact this is a difficult task.

Government and Politics

Dresmia is a unitary state under an absolute monarchy. The main organ of government is the hereditary monarchy, whom is supported by other organs such as the privy council and royal household. The government is highly centralised, but not inherently authoritarian - aiming to balance the power of the monarch, efficiency of government, and benevolence towards the Dresmian people.

Monarchy

The Dresmian monarchy is the hereditary head of state and head of government. Built on divine right theory, the monarchy holds absolute power. Consequently, the monarch oversees all three branches of government. The primary functions of the monarch are legislating and conducting the executive functions of the government in addition to overseeing the armed forces as commander-in-chief.

The monarch is also the head of the royal family so has some administrative duties over the ruling house. The current ruling house is the House of Brynach.

The current monarch is King Luke I, who became king on 20 August 2024 upon the creation of Dresmia.

Privy Council

The privy council is the chief advisory body to the monarch and the de facto executive branch of government. The body advises the monarch on the exercise of much of their powers. Membership is determined by the monarch's discretion but usually consists of the most trusted officers of the crown, senior peers, high-ranking military officials and senior Dresmian clergymen from the monarch's religion.

The council primarily advises on the use of executive powers of the monarch but can also suggest potential legislation for the monarch to enact in the future.

The monarch chairs the privy council, but the Lord President of the Privy Council acts as the administrative officer of the council on the monarch's behalf so the monarch has more time to focus on more pressing issues.

Judiciary

While no judicial system has been formally established, the functions of the judiciary are commonly conducted by the monarch and their court or by lesser courts established for fixed period by orders of the monarch. The privy council is seen as a quasi-supreme court due to the nature of the monarch within the council and the fact that the privy council can have some judicial powers devolved upon them by the monarch.

All judges employed in Dresmia are appointed to their post by the monarch and serve at their pleasure.

Law Enforcement

Dresmia currently do not have an established law enforcement agency. Despite this, some elements of professional policing have been introduced. For example on 6 September 2024, a royal order was issued by King Luke I outlining the basic principles of policing in Dresmia - citing the upholding of rule of law and in aiming to ensure any national police forces are respectable and professionally conduct their duties in order to ensure the prevention of crime and upholding of rights.

Military

The Dresmian Armed Forces are the military forces of the kingdom. Consisting of three branches (an army, navy and air force), the armed forces protect the sovereignty and people of the kingdom as well as providing security to the royal family.

The monarch is the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, so is the ultimate authority on military affairs. The Chief of the Defence Staff is the professional head of the armed forces, and governs the military - usually on behalf of or alongside the monarch.

Conscription is not practiced in Dresmia, though it is expected that citizens will sacrifice some time to the armed forces - whether that be in a civilian or uniformed capacity.

Reserves are also supported by the armed forces - allowing for people to serve in uniformed positions the armed forces in a part-time or quasi-volunteer capacity.

Culture

Dresmian culture is influenced by a blend of primarily Welsh and Christian cultures due to the cultural heritage of the state. The monarch is seen as the head of Dresmian culture due to the influence over culture afforded to them by their powers. A notable influence over the government is the preservation and development of national culture.

The national motto is "Gloria Patria" which is Latin for "Glory to the Fatherland", and the national anthem is "Free Dresmia" which is inspired by the American revolutionary war song "Free America".

The national animal is the poitou donkey, though the most common pet in Dresmia are dogs. The government has also introduced animal welfare laws, criminalising the mistreatment and rough handling of animals in Dresmia.

Philosophy

Dresmia has notable political, philosophical and religious traditions. Citizens are encouraged to participate in both national politics and philosophical thought. Popular philosophers include the likes of Søren Kierkegaard and Immanuel Kant. Citizens are highly encouraged to read philosophical works and use them to help develop national thought and culture.

Due to the philosophical tradition of Dresmian culture, a royal charter was issued on 8 September 2024 establishing the Royal Philosophy Society.

Politically, Dresmia leans towards traditional conservatism with elements of pragmatism. National unity and the preservation of national values are a cornerstone of Dresmian politics.

While a de jure secular state, Christianity is the de facto national religion. The monarchy is justified by divine right theory and with the expectation that the monarch practices the faith. Christianity plays an important role in Dresmian society, with the upholding of religious values commonplace especially by the monarchy who practices Roman Catholicism. Additionally, the Catholic Church was given its own royal charter permitting it to operate within Dresmia, and to have some privileges within the realm. Despite the dominance of the Christian faith, there is no restriction on practicing other religions.

Language

English is the official and most widely spoken language of the kingdom. Welsh English (or "Wenglish") is commonly spoken by the royal family. Welsh is also a common second language spoken or being learned by citizens and is recognised as minority language by the government.
