History

The crown principality is the second oldest royal office in Dresmia after the monarchy itself. The office was established on 22 August 2024 by the first royal decree issued by King Luke I. The decree outlined the position of crown prince, its role in the line of succession and the general duties of the office and enshrined the office as both a royal and government office.

Appointment

Officially, the crown prince is appointed by the monarch and is in office as long as the monarch wishes them to be. However, in practice the crown prince holds office for life or until their accession to the throne. The succession laws outline that any legitimate member of the royal family may be appointed to the crown principality. However, custom dictates that the crown prince should be appointed on an age-based system from the children of the monarch. If the monarch does not presently have children, it is customary to select a sibling to take office.

The crown prince, upon appointment, become first in line to the throne. After that, the order of succession is hereditary based. The privy council is charged with keeping up-to-date records of the current order of succession.

Duties

Officially, the duties of the crown prince are determined at the discretion of the monarch and devolved upon them by an order of the monarch. However, there are some duties that the officeholder carries out out of responsibility in their office. Usually the crown prince's duties are a mix of executive and ceremonial duties.

Common duties of the crown prince include:

  • Representing the state abroad on behalf of the monarch,
  • Welcoming dignitaries to Dresmia,
  • Managing state affairs in the monarch's absence,
  • Acting as Regent when the monarch is incapacitated,
  • Attending privy council meetings on the monarch's request or behalf,
  • Appointing the staff of their household,
  • Presenting honours awarded by the monarch,
  • Other duties as a member of the government,

Privileges

As the most senior member of the royal family and state after the monarch, the crown prince is authorised a number of privileges. These privileges include:

  • Seniority in the order of precedence,
  • Style of "Royal Highness",
  • A household styled after the monarch's,
  • A royal standard,

It is also not uncommon for the crown prince to be appointed to the privy council as an ex officio member. Additionally the officeholder usually receives honorary patronage of a military regiment and as a result is usually commissioned at the colonel-level in the Dresmian Army as part of this appointment. It is also good practice for the crown prince to receive national decorations and other noble titles for their services to the state.
