The Royal Chess Society (RCS), informally known as the National Chess Society, is a national cultural society in the Kingdom of Dresmia concerned with the promotion of the playing of chess. Founded by a royal charter of King Luke I on 7 September 2024, the society is the oldest in Dresmia.

The society facilitates the teaching and playing of chess on a local and national level. The society also hosts national chess tournaments and facilitates both friendly and competitive games of chess.

The society is governed by the Board of Directors, chaired by the Chairman of the Society, and is under the direct patronage of the Monarchy of Dresmia. The board is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the society, but the society's charter grants the monarch some regulatory power over the society.

History

The Royal Chess Society is the oldest national society in Dresmia. It dates back to 7 September 2024, and was created by a royal charter of King Luke I. The charter defined the rough organisational structure of the society in addition to the functions and role of the society. The charter was issued for a term of five years with the option to have the charter renewed at the end of its term.

Role

The role of the royal chess society is outlined in the charter establishing the organisation. The society's role includes:

  • Education in the mechanics of chess,
  • Facilitating chess tournaments,
  • Promote the playing of chess in Dresmian society,

The society is prominent in Dresmian culture due to the popularity of chess within Dresmia. Consequently, the organisation has some cultural influence. Additionally, due to the monarchy's patronage over the organisation, the state has a stake in the operations of the society which further enables the society to have further influence over culture.

Membership

Membership of the chess society is open to all Dresmian citizens and is regulated by the board of directors. The board determines the qualifications for membership and approves applications for membership but can also delegate the authority to approve applications to local chapters of the society.

Members of the society have access to the resources of the organisation and are eligible to attend their local events in addition to national events hosted by the society. Additionally, if the members are new to chess then the society may provide them a way to learn the mechanics of the game and to practice playing.

Members are ranked based on their skill in chess, in addition to the number of tournaments under the regulations of the society the members have won. This allows for better organisation of national tournaments and measuring skills in the sport.
