The Supreme Court of Agatonia (Agatonian: raiduanobók) is the highest judicial authority in the Commonwealth of Agatonia and the head of the judicial branch of the Agatonian state. It is composed of five judges known as associate justices, of whom one is designated chief justice. All judges serve one-year terms, although, when a judge is re-elected, its one-year term extends with another year.

Both the chief justice and the associate justice are elected in Supreme Court Chief Justice & Associate Justice Elections, which occur every year. The incumbent chief justice is Theodore Bear, who has been the chief justice since 24 October 2024.

The Supreme Court in its present form is established on 23 August 2024, which established the current judicial system. Before the establishment of the current Supreme Court, the court was composed of only one judge, the Member of the Supreme Court. Before that, there was even no court in the now defunct People's Republic of Agatonia, in which the government and the court only consisted of two members: the President and the Monarch.

History

There were no mentions to the judiciary in early Agatonian law. There was a de facto Supreme Court, which was composed of only one judge, the Member of the Supreme Court, although it had little to no function. Because of the de facto President's absolute rule, there wasn't even a court needed. After the current Supreme Court's establishment on 23 August 2024, President Kaito I took the vacant chief justice position to maintain surveillance and control to the Supreme Court, in order to actively run the Supreme Court, notwithstanding the fact that the Supreme Court did nothing before the elections.

On 24 October 2024, current chief justice Theodore Bear was elected by a 1-3 vote against Supreme Court chief justice candidate Manuel Shikakata. Theodore currently is one of the five judges of the Supreme Court, alongside Ford Shirokuma Senior, Ford Shirokuma Junior, Mister B. and Leon Savarin. Regarding the successful victory of Theodore Bear, he is described as "one of the most revolutionary politicians that have made a positive impact for the Agatonian Government" by President Kaito I.

Judges

The Supreme Court is composed of a number of judges elected in Supreme Court Chief Justice & Associate Justice Elections. The number of judges in the Supreme Court is five, of whom one is the chief justice. The term length of the judges is one year, although, when a judge is re-elected, its one-year term extends with another year.

The chief justice manages the daily affairs of the court, directs court sessions and divides tasks among the judges and the employees of the court and maintains disciplinary supervision. They are responsible for the operation and finances of the Supreme Court and represents the judiciary in the public eye.

The current judges are elected in the 2024 Supreme Court Chief Justice & Associate Justice Elections, elected on 24 October 2024. Long state names are abbreviated.
