Toponymy
The name 'Doppeland' has no significant relevance, however it is believed to be in relation to the German word 'Doppelgänger literally meaning 'double-goer', and was chosen as the Prince enjoyed the sound of the word. The crown in the center is similar to that used by English Medieval Kings, and was chosen to show the importance of the Prince in Doppeland.
Flag
The bright, vibrant colours of the flag represent the happiness and kind attitude that the nation has, as Doppeland presents itself as a friendly micronation.
Micronational History
Kozlova:
Doppeland began as a part of the now defunct Micronation called Kozlova and was an area of Kozlova's capital, Saklar City, situated in the north of the Micronation. On the 30th of June, the monarchist population protested, stating that they wanted an area of Saklar City to become independent, with a Monarch as the head of state. The President of Kozlova began talks with the peaceful protesters on the same day, and decided that due to its mainly religious population (which differed to the primarily Secular population of the rest of the state) a Catholic Theocratic Monarch should be appointed. On the 1st of July, The President signed an agreement, stating that Doppeland would become an independent micronation, led by his own brother, HM Dominic Fordham as the King of Doppeland, with himself as the official head of state. The King then decreed that Doppeland would remain part of Kozlova, as a protectorate.
Breakdown of Kozlova:
During the various rebellions that were occurring throughout Kozlova, the King decided that he would temporarily relinquish power from the King's Parliament, the regional legislative assembly appointed by the Monarch, and his own power, to try and maintain control in Kozlova, giving it to the President. As it became apparent that Kozlova would not recover from the dissidence of the people, Doppeland, while still officially independent became defunct. A Lord Regent, Miles Fordham, HM Fordham's father was appointed, ruling over Doppeland and Amon Lasgalen, however due to the instability of Amon Lasgalen, as anti-Kozlovans had taken over, the position was predominantly symbolic.
Eventually, during the January Revolution, Kozlovan forces were severely depleted, being limited to the north of Kozlova. Eventually, the Kozlovan President began talks with the rebels, who agreed that Kozlova should be dismantled, and in its place, a new nation by the name of the Sorrenian Federation should be formed. During this time, Doppeland remained in limbo, and the King had no say in the transformation of the micronation due to the transfer of powers to the President.
The Sorrenian Federation:
After the breakdown of Kozlova, a new micronation called Sorrenia emerged, and, as the previous president of Kozlova had, the President of Sorrenia (Miles of Sorrenia) publicly stated that he accepted Doppeland as a semi-autonomous micronation, however also stated that Doppeland would no longer be considered a protectorate, but an official semi-autonomous state. The King accepted this, and also publicly stated that he accepted the ruling of the Legislative government of Sorrenia, the National Assembly, however the King's Parliament was reinstated as an Executive state branch.
During the reforms of Sorrenia that took place during the Golden Period, the King of Doppeland was reinstated as a Prince, due to his young age, and the official title was changed, from the Kingdom of Doppeland to the Principality of Doppeland. Furthermore, due to its small size (Doppeland is the smallest claim by Sorrenia), Doppeland became a Federal District of Sorrenia, making it the second Federal District, along with Levaria, Sorrenia's capital city. Also, the Principality's Catholic elements were de-institutionalized, 'due to a separation of state and religion' law that was passed in the Federation.
Non-Micronational History
Chester-le Street, the macronational town that Doppeland is located in was initially created as a Roman fort by the name of Concangis. This was built alongside the Roman road Cade's Road (now Front Street) and close to the River Wear, around 100 A.D., and was occupied till the Romans left Britain in 410 A.D. At the time the Wear was navigable to at least Concangis, and may also have provided food for the garrisons stationed there.
In specific, it is believed that Doppeland was a garbage area for the fort. As a result, several Roman artifacts such as plates have been found in the area.
Geography
Doppeland is located in a small housing development called Hopgarth Gardens, which is also the parameter for Saklar City. Doppeland claims several houses and gardens inside Saklar City, and is the smallest Sorrenian claim, being only around 0.02 km2. It is also located very close to Chester Burn which connects to the River Wear.
Facilities and Infrastructure
Due to its tiny size, Doppeland has almost no infrastructure other than several houses and gardens and a small road meandering through the housing development. There is however a Sewage Treatment Works, however is luckily far enough away to avoid noxious smells.
