The United Federation of Socialist Micronations (UFSM) (Pristinian Latin: Federatio Unificas Micronationae Socialistes), also often referred to as Socialist Union, is a territorial micronation.

History

The UFSM's first predecessor state, the Empire of Pristinia, was founded on April 22, 2008. The UFSM itself came into existence on March 14, 2010, when Nemkhavia left the Socialist Union of Nemkhavia and Pristinia, and shortly thereafter New Carthaginia joined what was now for a short period of time the People's Republic of Pristinia. Pristinia's population of 26 and New Carthaginia's population of 20 joined to make a population of 46 altogether, almost reaching the population of the Pitcairn Islands. The reason for Nemkhavia's leaving was the rise of the SUNP's Authoritarian Communist Party, the predecessor of what is now the CPUFSM. The UFSM disappeared from the micronational community after the Pristinian Conspiracy allegations, although it is unknown if it is still physically active.

Geography

The 208.8 km2 of formerly German soil which the UFSM claims and occupies is all located within the temperate climate zone. The mean altitude is 37 m above sea level, the mean latitude is at 50.925° N, and the mean longitude is at 6.9° E. The area covers about a third of what was formerly the German city of Cologne (more precisely the South-Western one), as well as the former satellite towns of Hürth (Howereth), Brühl (Brewel) and Frechen (Freckon). The wind direction is usually Southerly to South-South-Easterly, the mean yearly temperature in summer is approximately 26 °C, in winter approximately 3 °C. The mean monthly precipitation is 66.42 mm/m2.

Flora and Fauna

Several plant and animal species are native to the UFSM, most notably the Rhenish Red Squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris rhenaniensis), a disputed sub-species of the Common Red Squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) claimed to have been distinguished by the People's Academy of Pristinia, the main difference being its extreme confidingness. Other common animal species apart from insects include the European Robin, the Shrew and the Sultan Tit. The most frequent trees include the Oak Tree, Maple Tree, Birch Tree, Acorn Tree and Hazelnut Tree. The most frequent non-tree plants include the Stinging Nettle, the Thistle, the Daisy, the Daffodil and Browntop Grass (Agrostis capillaris).

Controversy

The UFSM is considered one of the most controversial micronations of its era. The controversy surrounding the UFSM arose after the Pristinian Conspiracy a dossier sponsored by the Grand Unified Micronational and the Secretary-General of the Organisation of Active Micronations. The paper, written by Robert Lethler, accused Mark Dresner of the UFSM of hiding behind a pseudonym. He was actually Frederic I of Pristinia, the paper alleged. The paper also accused the new president of the UFSM as simply being another pseudonym of Frederic I. After these allegations were published, the UFSM disappeared from the micronational community. It is supposed that it collapsed.

Robert Lethler, former foreign minister of Erusia, claimed in mid-June 2010 that the Empire of Eleytheria was another nation founded by Frederic/Dresner. The evidence given, however, was deemed inconclusive by most micronationalists and thus this theory was met with much disagreement. Later investigation proved these accusations to be accurate. William Danforth, Frederic I and Dresner were all personalities of Sebastian Linden.

The tables would turn however, as Linden would shortly expose Lethler for having fabricated his identity and nearly all of Erusia's history and population as well. Linden was eventually accepted as a core member of the community and even became an admin despite his controversial past. Lethler would depart never to return in a significant way. In 2017, Linden would claim he had fabricated the entire controversy, including Lethler's existence. However, this final twist was exposed in 2020 as yet another hoax, with Bradley of Dullahan revealing that the conflict between Lethler and Linden was genuine.
