Subdivisions of Laskaridia

The Kingdom of Laskaridia had 5 main subdivisions, which were organized into provinces, the provinces wee then divided into cities and counties, these were not designated by population, but by historical significance. The Laskaridian noble titles that are tied to land holding may constitute areas outside of Laskaridia's territories, these arrangements were made primarily with the Commonwealth of Juniperia.

Laskaridia was a de-jure federation of provinces, with each province having had their own devolved legislation and government. As well as a Seneschal, with all except one being non-Lascarian. The provinces of Laskaridia were required to follow Laskaridian laws and could not make laws that contradict the higher laws. Each province also has its own geography and culture, as well as transportation. Which is maintained by local authorities.

Subdivisions of the Laskaridian Commonwealth Association are not affected by laws of the subdivisions or main legislature (Chamber of Lords). Therefore, they were not considered "subdivisions" of Laskaridia. Some commonwealth realms, such as the Dominion of Didacus, and the Dominion of Noucastire have been described as subdivisions of Laskaridia proper, one due to their geographical relations to the mainland, and two, due to them being non-sovereign entities.

After the nullification of the Sainathen Accords and the dissolution of the Laskaridian instututions, the provinces were intuitively ceded back to Juniperia. Where they formed the Federation of Alturic Territories as a protectorate of Juniperia, they are a collection of provinces under rule of Juniperia and maintained their Saintathennic rulers.

Types of subdivisions

Laskaridia had 3 main subdivisional types (for non Commonwealth realms) and 4 types of states for Commonwealth realms. For non-Commonwealth states, it was Province (the highest level), each province had Counties, and each county may have hadd a city. For Commonwealth realms, there were protectorates, dominions, colonies and crown lands. Protectorates were sovereign entities that have joined the commonwealth and maintained their sovereignty, dominions were indirect possessions that could have local government, crown lands were personal possessions of the King of Laskaridia, they could have a Viceroy but they were not allowed to have local government structure. Colonies were the same as crown lands except they were allowed to have small government and could have a Viceroy as well. They werealso possessions of the state and not the King.

A crownland can be thought of like the Congo under Belgian rule, it was a personal possession of King Leopold II, but in the Laskaridian case, all laws of Laskaridia apply and were enforced in crown lands. Colonies were similar to British colonies during the 1800s and 1900s, in the sense that Laskaridia can apply its own laws to colonies. Dominions were the same way, except they have a higher degree of autonomy. The Dominion of Vikialand is an example, it had its own House of Deputies and political parties. Protectorates were the most autonomous Commonwealth Subdivisions because although the King was the de-jure head of state, he and his delegation had little to no governmental power over a protectorate. As the name suggests, protectorates were merely states protected politically, militarily and diplomatically by the King and his realms.

Non-Commonwealth realms (the mainland subdivisions), were unlike the Commonwealth ones. They are directly affected by Laskaridian laws, but are allowed to have had devolved legislatures and regional parties. A dominion of the commonwealth may have applied and be voted into the mainland if they have a sufficient geographical clause relating them to the mainland provinces. There currently exists no way for an overseas or faraway land of the Commonwealth to be directly incorporated due to the struggles of the erstwhile Laskaridian state to enforce its laws on a direct possession (province) that is farther away. Hence, the creation of the Commonwealth.

Cities

A "city" in Laskaridia constitutes an area of historical, cultural, or other importance to the Kingdom of Laskaridia. They are various types of historical settlements that could be considered as cities. One example is Laskaridia and Donnauberg (Donnau, in modern terms). Both cities had periods of elevated action, but had no permanent population during these time periods. The city of Laskaridia is considered an important site of the realm. Laskaridian cities do not have any population that resides there permanently, but are often inhabited.

Historical

Historically, subdivisions of Westavia were known as "provinces" or "prōvinciæ." Each province was entitled to a Duke or other landed noble. In a similar manner to the German Empire during its early zenith. Due to its war-oriented nature, provinces were meant to last in their more worn-down manner. Each provincial "government" had no legislature or organized bureaucracy. They instead served as satellites of the main Emperor in Laskaridia. During the Ruisseauan times, provinces were called "cároi" or "caranoi", they were developed due to Ruisseau's federal nature, they had their own rights, legislature and government. Ruisseauan provincial structure, with the system of the caranoi, was much more developed than Westavian provincial structures.
