In the New Southern Rhine, a Steward (Hunsrik: Statthalter; Portuguese: Mordomo) is an official appointed by the monarch to serve and represent him, usually charged with carrying out administrative functions on behalf of the monarch. With four Stewards at the Court, the position de facto functions as chief executive officer in each of the country's four cantons. Each of them also represents the cantons they administer in the Katarinensisch Reichskreis, the national advisory parliament.

As canton administrators, Stewards have almost absolute powers, being even free to organize the administrative structure of the cantons and answering only to the King and abiding by the Fundamental Laws of the realm. The office has no term limit, being nominally for life or until the monarch removes the holding person from office.[1]
