The President of Doland (Dolish: Präsadant von Dolen) is the executive head of state of the Dolish Realm, as well as the oldest continuous office in the nation. The president is chief executive, but shares executive power with the prime minister and council of ministers, and serves as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
The president is directly elected and is the highest national office.
The current president is Lucas Knightley.
History
The presidency is the oldest continuously constituted office in Doland. It was founded on 1 July 2023 and was the first office to be founded.
Powers
The presidency is theoretically the most powerful Dolish office. The office's powers include:
- Appointing or Dismissing the Prime Minister and Government
- Calling and Dismissing Parliament
- Calling General Elections
- Passing Executive Decrees
- Vetoing or Assenting to Bills Passed by Parliament
- Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces
- Power of Pardon and Amnesty
- Accrediting and Receiving Diplomats
Due to the nature of some powers of the presidency, it can make Doland's government more presidential over semi-presidential when some powers are exercised. As well as this, the president is under no obligation to appoint a prime minister so can govern the nation directly under some circumstances.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the presidency the following requirements must be met:
- be 17.5 Years of Age
- be a Dolish Citizen
- be Nominated by a Political Party or the Electoral Commission as an Independent Candidate
- Not have been Convicted of any Previous Crimes
Appointment
According to the constitution, the president is elected via direct election. If no candidate gets a clear majority, the constitution allows for a second round of voting in which voters choose between the two highest scoring candidates in the first round.
Presidents are elected for terms of seven years, with term indefinitely renewable.
