The Order of the Emuis the second highest civilian honour in the Sovereign Municipality of Ameristralia. Male and female individuals are eligible for the award. Candidates are nominated by the Lord Mayor of Ameristralia who have contributed to the Ameristralian culture and society in an exemplary manner. The Executive Council of the government votes to award an individual with the honour.
There are three rites within the Order of the Emu; each possessing its own requirements and titles.
- Grand Knight of the Order of the Emu is the highest rite. Candidates for Grand Knight are senior-level government and military officials or allied foreign government and military leaders.
- Commander of the Order of the Emu is the second rite. Candidates for Commander are often high-level government and military leaders or foreign government, military, or civilians who exemplify the Ameristralian values on the world stage.
- Companion of the Order of the Emu is the first rite. Candidates for this rite are typically professional, education, and industry leaders who have contributed to the improvement of Ameristralian arts, culture, economy, education, growth, health, industry, nation or society.
The individual rites of the Order of the Emu have distinct colours, badges, medals, garments, and ceremonies to distinguish between the recipients of the rites.
History of the Order of the Emu
The Order of the Emu was created by the Lord Mayor David Brooke to acknowledge the impact individuals may have on their community and society. His Excellency David Brooke was the first recipient of the honour, as it was himself that founded the Sovereign Municipality of Ameristralia. Mr Brooke spoke in Municipal Assembly to request the government consider legislation for the eligibility, categories, and requirements for the Order of the Emu.
The Executive Council developed the requirements and categories in consultation with the Municipal Assembly, and passed the Act to Establish Ameristralian Honours for Citizens, Military and Foreign Dignitaries - Contributory Factors, Eligibility, Requirements, Categories, and Rites 2021, more commonly called Ameristralian Honours Act of 2021. The Lord Mayor signed the Act, officially established the honours on 28 August 2021.
Categories for Nomination of Candidates to receive the Order of the Emu
The Ameristralian Honours Act of 2021 established the following categories for the nomination of candidates;
- Arts and Culture
- Community and Society
- Design and Development
- Economy and Finance
- Education
- Government
- Health
- Industry
- Justice (Legal and Social)
- Military and
- Foreign Dignitaries and military leaders
Eligibility and Requirements for Nomination
The Lord Mayor may submit a total of 5 nominations to the Executive Council each year for consideration to receive the Order of the Emu.
Nominees must demonstrate continual dedication to the improvement of Ameristralia in one of the categories established in the Ameristralian Honours Act of 2021, have served in the government, military, cultural, design, education, or health fields, and have exemplified the Ameristralian values of Equality, Liberty, and Integrity.
The Ameristralian Honours Act of 2021 did not set a minimum age for the Order of the Emu but did distinguish three rites of the Order, each with greater achievement in a category required to be nominated. The act bequeaths "the Lord Mayor to use discernment and discretion regard nominations because the Order of the Emu is meant to be a prestigious honour not achievable by all."
The Executive Council has the full authority to accept or deny all nominations or remove an honour from an individual.
