The Municipal Assembly of Ameristralia is the unicameral legislature of the Sovereign Municipality of Ameristralia. Members of the Assembly are elected by a Preferential voting system to represent their respective Councils. The term length for the Municipal Assembly is one year. Assembly elections take place on the first Saturday in February each year.

History

The Municipal Assembly was created via the Constitution of Ameristralia written on 13 August 2021. The current constitution was ratified in early September 2021, which validated the government structure of the municipality.

The Sovereign Lord Mayor announced the creation of the Municipal Councils in preparation for the February 2022 Municipal elections[1] The existence of councils were not initially considered when the Constitution was drafted. Therefore the creation of councils was to create an equal representation of the citizens of Ameristralia.

Each of the four Municipal Councils is represented by two seats in the Municipal Assembly; equaling a total of eight assembly seats. The total number of seats is ten, which includes the Sovereign Lord Mayor and Duchess of Brookfield, as Head of State and Speaker and Advisor to the Government, respectively.

The Members of the Assembly, post-nominally MA, form the Government. The leader of the highest vote acquiring party shall be appointed as the Chief Minister of the government. The remaining seven members shall be nominated a ministry portfolio by the Chief Minister-elect. The Sovereign Lord Mayor and Duchess of Brookfield must accept all nominations for ministry. Each member shall take the Oath of Office prior to sitting in the chamber or assuming their appointed portfolio.

Current composition and election results

The current Municipal Assembly is not composed. The first Municipal election is scheduled for 5 February 2022. Parties have until 3 January 2022 to declare their intention to stand candidates for the assembly.
