Incumbent Prime Minister Prime Minister-elect |
The July 2010 Erusian General Election took place from June 30th to July 3rd 2010 to choose members for the seventh sitting of the National People's Assembly in the Democratic People's Republic of Erusia, and to elect a new ceremonial President for that nation. It was the sixth election in Erusian history, and the first in which the formerly ruling Erusian National Communist Party did not compete, having merged with the Party of Socialist Labour to form the National Unity Party. The election took place across the Democratic People's Republic for a three-day polling period, during which almost 90% of the population - which had been enlarged since the last election - turned out to cast votes at one of the five polling services. All-in-all twenty constituencies returned members to serve in the new Assembly, only five of which were newly created and so had no incumbent candidate standing for re-election. Barely more than half of all the incumbents standing in the election held their seats.
In what is considered to be the greatest political upset since the November Revolution, the National Unity Party lost power for the first time the history of the DPRE. The Democratic Party of Erusia, under the leadership of political newcomer Katrina Walters, gained eleven seats and won an overall majority of six (enough to amend the Constitution indepedently) in the new Assembly, making her Prime Minister of Erusia. The Nationals were left with a mere seven seats, losing nearly half of those they held at dissolution to the Democrats as a result of a mammoth 30% swing from the government to the liberal conservative opposition. In terms of the swing and seats gained, the Democratic victory was the largest landslide in Erusia's electoral history.
Simultaneous elections were also held, albeit indirectly, for the local administrative authorities of each of the five Districts that make up Erusia's unitary state. The Nationals lost control of 3 of their 4 Districts Authorities to the Democrats, meaning that the Democratic Party now controls four-fifths of all local government bodies in the Democratic People's Republic. Furthermore, the Democrats won a landslide victory in the electoral college used to determine who wins which District and who will have the first shot at forming a government in the event of a hung chamber, leading their opponents with some 57 votes in the college.
In the Presidential election, National Unity Party candidate Carwyn Jenkins succeeded - against the odds - in being elected to the now-ceremonial Presidency. Most analysts on the night felt that this was a consequence of his personal popularity with those liberal voters who swing between the liberal right of the former Communist Party and the Democrats, rather than as a result of a last-minute burst of support for the NUP itself.
In terms of proportionality, it was a near perfect replication of the election held one year previously, but with the two competing parties changing places.
