The Speaker of the House of Commons is the presiding officer of the House of Commons, the lower house of the Parliament of Baustralia. The current speaker is Sir Greg Watts, and was appointed by Sir Nick Sullivan on 7 April 2020, prior to it becoming an independently elected position.
The speaker presides over the House's debates, speaking to members, and laying out the agenda. The speaker is also responsible for maintaining order in the House, and may scald members who break the rules thereof. Speakers are non-partisan and renounce all affiliation with their party after election as Speaker.
There have been four Speakers of the House of Commons, three of which were previously conservative, and one from the Worker's Party.
