The Metropolitan Party, often shortened to Metro, the Met. Party or MET, is a social-democratic political party and one of the big four parties permitted by the prince to stand for election in the Princian Commonwealth. The Metropolitan Party first became a ruling party after the November 2019 ministerial election when it formed a coalition with the United Democratic & Liberal Party (then known simply as the United Democratic Party). Since then, the Met. Party has grown to form a majority government without a coalition. The Metropolitan Party is known for its internationalist (cosmopolitanist) views and is self-styled as Princia's only green party. The Metropolitan Party was formerly a constituent party of the Met-Dem Coalition, the continuation of the coalition formed from the May 2021 unitary election following the People's Party & Princian Party of Socialists' landslide result, although falling short of a majority, and was part of the Metropolitan Party and United Democratic Party's front against the spread of communism in Princia. The coalition remained until the August 2021 unitary election, holding a near-80% seat-share over all three houses of the Prince's Order at its peak. The Metropolitan Party was founded during the Great Princian Leftist Swing (Jan 2019-Jan 2020) as an alternative to the more radical People's Party or Princian Party of Socialists (which have since merged into one party, the People's Party & Princian Party of Socialists). The Metropolitan Party mainly appeals towards the urban areas of the Princian Commonwealth, and has therefore won many of the city-districts in Princia. The Metropolitan Party's first ever election victory, were it successfully acquired a 5.6% majority within the House of Ministers, was the December 2020 unitary election. The Metropolitan Party's best ever election showing (standing without a coalition) was the January 2021 unitary election, were it won a majority of 8.3% within the House of Ministers, with an average majority of 11.7% throughout all three houses (the House of Ministers, House of Head Ministers and House of Lord Ministers).
The Metropolitan Party believes in the power of the group rather than the individual, that the people are best protected by the government, and that smaller geographical areas have a better understanding of what its citizens want/need & therefore should be delegated power to decide their own legislative course. The party played a large part in countering the UDP's aggressive centralisation by implementing the delegation of power for the creation autonomous areas to each province's governor-general with the passing of the 2022 Devolution Act.
