Lewisport (Fontasian: Lefvespurt) is the largest city in the Kingdom of Fontasia and the largest Fontasian-populated city in the world. It is located in the south-central area of Cape Cod, along Lewis Bay. Established in August 2013 as a small colony made by the young Fontasian Republic, the city gradually expanded and became one of the largest cities established by Assemblian peoples. A crossroads and strategic port, Lewisport became an extremely important city in Assemblian history. Like Fontum, Lewisport has an extended metropolitan area which includes such places such as Crocus Harbor and Dilu Island.

Etymology

Lewisport derives its name from the bay it is situated in, known as Lewis Bay. Fontasian settlers moving from the now abandoned colony of Namskaket in northeastern Cape Cod came to the region, and it had no prior Fontasian name as it had never been explored by Fontasians. The region where Lewisport is situated is known as Lewisia.

History

Pre-Fontasian History (????-2013)

The region of Lewisport, known as Yarmouth was originally inhabited by the Cummaquid peoples of the Nauset Wampanoag tribe. No actual dates of the arrival of these people are known.

In 1639, the region was incorporated into Plymouth Colony. The colonists of the area participated in many colonial conflicts such as King Philip's War.

During the American Revolution, troops from Yarmouth were sent to Lexington and Concord and some served under General George Washington in the Defense of Dorchester Heights. Being a coastal town, the Royal Navy blockaded the town. The Royal Navy would once again blockade the town during the War of 1812. Into the 1800s, many famous sailors lived in Yarmouth and conducted trade with the Far East.

In the 20th century, Yarmouth became a resort town and much of the streets and neighborhoods that would become modern Lewisport were constructed in that era. The first Fontasian-contacted peoples existed in the late 1990s, however it would take nearly two decades before actual contact would be made with them. [1]

Early Fontasian Colonial Era (2013-2015)

Fontasian presence on Cape Cod was not unknown before the colonization of Lewisia. A Rennite colony was established on the northwest coast of the peninsula, along a tidal marsh known as the Namskaket River. Rennite Namskaket, also known as Namskaket Plantation was frequently visited by the soon-to-be King Conor as a summer vacation spot. He and his family rented a small cottage next to the Rennite compound in the colony. The small colony was inherited by Conor after the collapse of the Rennite tribe in late 2012. By the time of the Fontasian Republic's establishment in May 2013, moves towards establishing a permanent settlement in the region began to pick up pace. Several candidates for the possible colony were decided upon, but Lewisia was the most central and most strategic option.

In August 2013, an expedition was sent from Fontum to establish a foothold along Lewis Bay in the central part of Cape Cod. There, Fontasians came into contact with an already well-settled group who came from Wamesia near modern Dobrok. These people were known as the Davosians. The Davosians openly welcomed the Fontasians to their land, and an agreement was made to divide the region between them. The Davosians were given a spacious plot of land north of where downtown Lewisport is now, and in return the Davosians gave their largest settlement to the Fontasians.

This settlement, originally named Klundarah was renamed to Lewisport. Conor and his family moved into the old Davosian leader's house and renamed it to the Summer Palace, as it would act as a summer house for the royalty of Fontasia. The takeover of Klundarah is historically known as the beginning of Fontasian and Assemblian colonization in New England.

In spring 2014, the Fontasians returned from a winter in Fontasia back to their summer colony and began developing Lewisport. They made contact with two other colonial groups, the Rentamians and Petrinians. Both were relatively friendly to Fontasians, and they were openly accepting to be integrated into the growing Fontasian colonial capital.

In late summer, the first expeditions to explore the region surrounding Lewisia, known as "New Assemblia" began. A small tidal island was discovered just east of Lewisport, it being connected by a bridge to the mainland. This island, first known as Brandenburg Island would later be renamed to Dilu Island, an extremely famous and controversial island in the micronational community, the spot of the Dilu Island dispute and the Dilu War. Fontasians wouldn't revisit the island until 2021.

2015 saw several developments in colonial Lewisport. The subsequent Fontasian Revolution in late spring and summer created the Colony of Lewisia which was directly administered by the Provisional Government in Fontum. This would be the first time Lewisport acted officially as a colonial capital. The colony was among the several colonies of the First Assemblic Empire.

Assemblian Lewisport (2016-2021)

In early 2016 snowstorms came through Lewisport, which didn't usually see significant amounts of snow in winter. Spring and summer 2016 saw the further development of Lewisport. Lewisia became the most important Assemblian colony at this point.

Ties closened with the Rentamians and Petrinians in the fall months of 2016, as the lands of the Davosians slowly began to shrink. A unique coastal Fontasian culture began to develop in the colony. A group of Davosians constructed a wall along the northern lawn of the Summer Palace, which was known by the Fontasians as the Stockade. The wall prevented travel between the Fontasians and friendlier Davosians, significantly damaging relations

Another major year was 2017, where much action occurred in Lewisport. In the late spring, naval exercises conducted by the Assemblic Imperial Navy were conducted in the recently discovered Antores Pond, a few miles inland from downtown Lewisport. The Navy explored the coastline of the small pond and discovered clay deposits beneath the surface of the pond. A few months later, during the First Assemblian Civil War which took place in late June and early July 2017, Lewisport was sieged twice by Republican forces, which included the previously allied Rentamians. However relations after the conflict were revived.

Late 2017 saw no major events in the region, other than the Colony of Lewisia being significantly expanded and renamed to the Colony of Massadoria, which Lewisport firmly remained capital of. In 2018, a brief confrontation occurred between Assemblian forces and a recently uncontacted group known as the Spanogese in early spring. No further attacks happened afterwards. Civil War victory celebrations began to be celebrated in summer 2018, a tradition that continues to this day.

Relations with the Rentamians and Petrinians became even closer in late 2018. The Rentamians were given land to act as a colony for their recently established, Assemblian-backed kingdom. However, only months later the Rentamians would agree to become a protectorate of the Fourth Assemblic Empire, establishing the Protectorate of Gilecia.

In 2019, few events occurred. After the collapse of the Fourth Assemblic Empire, the region was mostly left to its own devices, which briefly lead to a revival of Davosian dominance in the region. An impactful tornado tore through Lewisport on 23 July. This tornado barely missed the Summer Palace by only a few hundred yards. The Emperor was not present in the colony at the time, but it was the closest a tornado has ever passed near an Imperial residence. Several homes just south of the Palace were damaged.

In late 2019, the Assemblic Federation gained control of the region, re-establishing the Colony of Massadoria as a result.

During 2020, Lewisport became known as the "southern capital of Assemblia" as the division of power between the cities of Lewisport in the south, Fontum in the mainland and Dobrok in the north became more apparent in the Assemblic Imperium. Lewisport would come under siege once more in the Third Assemblic Civil War, where it was divided into the Imperial-backed royalists, the republicans and the fascists which consisted of the Petrinians and Rentamians. Only one culminative battle occurred in early July. After this, a formal diplomatic summit between the Petrinians and Rentamians occurred with the Assemblians to agree on a truce for non-aggression and neutrality in affairs between each people. This truce was apart of the Novus Reformationem, which allowed the establishment of the Supreme Directorate as a legislature, ending the authoritarian phase of the Imperium.

In November 2020 a 4.2 magnitude earthquake struck the city of Lewisport, rattling the Summer Palace while the Emperor of Assemblia was present. There was no signifcant damage to any buildings. Lewisport remains to this day to be the only Fontasian city to experience an earthquake and a tornado in its history.

Modern Lewisport (2021-)

In 2021, the Petrinians were ceded land for them to establish their own state. However the validity of these claims remain disputed, as there is a lack of demarcation of claims on documents and maps. The first Assemblian expedition to the newly renamed Dilu Island occurred in late June. The islands natural geography and biology was analyzed. Nearly eight months later, the island would be the focal point of the Dilu Island dispute. The first Unity Day celebrated in Lewisport as a continuation and officialization of the sporadic Civil War celebrations that had been celebrated over the years since 2017. In fall and winter 2021, Lewisport and Fontum became even more connected by the Second Assemblic Federation allowing for the city to be integrated into the Capitol District, which until then only included Fontum. This integration allowed Fontum to have a port and allowed Lewisport to have connections in the mainland provinces.

Lewisport in early 2022 saw little major events, except the Dilu Island dispute which lasted from late February into late April 2022, the first intermicronational scandal the Kingdom of Fontasia was involved in. The Empire of Meritia, Kingdom of Scynja and Democratic Christian Federation of Melite all have claims to the island. The second Dilu Island expedition occurred, which saw the Fontasian flag being planted for the first time on the island and more detailed images of the island. Today, Lewisport is the "southern capital" of the Kingdom of Fontasia, and acts as a retreat for nobility in Fontum. Dilu Island is now widely recognized as the "Micronational Beach" or the "Island of Micronations" due to the many nations holding or previously holding claims to the island. With Fontasia's growing geopolitical importance and regrowth of military, political and economic capabilities, Lewisport is the second-most important city in Fontasia, and an important city in the New England Sector.

Geography and Climate

Lewisport and its extended metropolitan area lie on a flat coastal plain which makes up most of Cape Cod. Cape Cod itself was created due to glaciers receding and raking up minerals and sand from the seafloor to create small landmasses and archipelagos of islands. Lewisport's port town, Crocus Harbor lies along Lewis Bay, a sheltered bay bordered on its west by a peninsula known as Great Island. The Summer Palace, in downtown Lewisport lies one half of a mile north and it lies on a small hill known as Klundarah Hill. The metropolitan area extends in all directions of downtown Lewisport Proper.

Klundarah Hill is often called the highest point of Lewisport, although this has never been confirmed. The hill barely rises off the flat terrain, an estimated 30 feet above sea level. Southern areas of Lewisport lie within the coastal flood plain, below sea level. Major points of geography include Crocus Beach, the major beach of Lewisport along Crocus Harbor, Iskva Forest, a forest that can seem jungle-like in the summer months, one of Lewisport's only natural lands. The Dilu River and Crocus Creek are major outflows from Lewis Bay, both being marshland tidal creeks. Most of the area is dominated by arrays of crisscrossing roads and streets that can be extremely busy during summer months.

Lewisport is known for its mediterranean-like climate. It has warm and humid summers and cool, rainy winters. In summer months, temperatures average around 72 degrees fahrenheit and in winter months temperatures average around 37 degrees fahrenheit. Although uncommon, snowfall usually happens in January and February during the winter months. Due to the dry and sandy soil, some species of cacti can grow in Lewisport. One notable species is the prickly pear.

Lewis Bay has relatively calm waters along Crocus Beach but west of Admiralty Point waters are far more volatile. The area in the bay with the most tidal difference is Dilu Island and along Crocus Creek. At low tide, most of the Dilu Strait will dry up revealing a sand flat with small crab holes.

During the winter months, the city is rarely visited by the Royal Family and tourists due to the relatively low activity in the region and its colder weather. The summer months, especially in July the region is busy with tourists and visitors. The city has far more recreational activities than Fontum, making it a destination among Fontasians.

Recreation and Culture

Lewisport is a hotspot for activities and is widely renowned in Fontasia. In summer months, the area is crowded with tourists. Going to the beach, swimming, kayaking, biking, sailing and fishing are extremely popular activities. An American waterpark just across the border from northern Lewisport attracts lots of attention. Many houses in Lewisport are rented in summer months, even the Summer Palace.

In winter months, Lewisport has limited to no activity, as it is solely a vacation town. Due to its vibrant culture and regular visits by the Royal Family in warmer months, Lewisport has been known as the "Summer Capital of Fontasia."
