Fridgerton, officially known as The Kingdom of Fridgerton (Maltese: Ir-Renju ta' Friġerton) is a micronation located in Malta, Europe. The physical territory of The Kingdom of Fridgerton is currently claimed by the Republic of Malta. The capital and largest city of the Kingdom of Fridgerton is Ħan-Ġemma, which acts as the administrative centre of the nation. Apart from physical territory, the Kingdom of Fridgerton maintains an active online governance system. The Kingdom of Fridgerton has been a work-in-progress since early 2022 and is currently on the way to declare independence some time in 2024 or early 2025.

The Monarch is currently recognised as the sole ruler of the Kingdom of Fridgerton. Whilst a democratically elected government is mentioned in the constitution, it is to be set up once a threshold of 100 citizens is reached, to ensure that the micronation is successful and large enough to warrant multiple people leading different aspects of it.

The Kingdom of Fridgerton prioritizes peaceful coexistence and mutually beneficial relationships with all nations. It extends unilateral recognition to various macronations and seeks bilateral relations with micronations.

Etymology

The name "Fridgerton", is derived from the word "Fridge".

This name was chosen after the current Monarch of the Kingdom of Fridgerton, King George was called a fridge as an insult. Whilst offensive in the context it was used in, by time it ended up being used as an inside joke. This led to King George naming the micronation after it.

History

Initial Planning

The first symbol designed for what would eventually become the Kingdom of Fridgerton

The Kingdom of Fridgerton started as a project on 28th April 2022. King George went down the Micronational Rabbithole when they were sick and excused from going to school. This gave the King the perfect opportunity to start a project to beat the boredom that comes from being stuck at home with barely anything to do. After the King contacted some of their friends to get their opinion, work on the Kingdom of Fridgerton began. Progress was rapid, and therefore the date for declaring the indepdenence of the Kingdom of Fridgerton from the Republic of Malta was set to be the 21st of September 2022[1], to coincide with Jum l-Indipendenza (Independence Day). However, because of multiple setbacks, King George decided to delay the Declaration of Independence and work on improving the founding documents before declaring independence. Unfortunately this led to very small steps being made, and at multiple points the whole project was abandoned.

In early 2024, King George decided to revive the micronation, and revamped various documents. They also worked on resetting previous progress and starting from scratch in some instances, which helped them to put all their effort into creating the Kingdom of Fridgerton. Currently the final preparations are being made to declare independence some time in 2024.

Government and Politics

Powers
The Monarch has wide-ranging power in the Kingdom of Fridgerton, at least until a government is set up. Amongst other things, they can deny or revoke citizenship, enact emergency powers, and unilaterally alter the constitution. The Monarch also currently has the responsibility of taking care of internal and external affairs. Currently the Monarch also has the authority to draft up and enact new laws, with them being called Acts of the Crown rather than Acts of Parliament.

Selection
The reigning house of the Kingdom of Fridgerton is the House of Lefleur, and the house's head automatically becomes the Monarch. Currently, this is George Vella, the founding father of the House and the Kingdom of Fridgerton. There is no current line of succession, but the Monarch has the responsibility to pre-select a successor before they abdicate. A coronation ceremony is expected eventually, but it is mostly ceremonial, similar to the United Kingdom's. It is expected to be held privately, but a proclamation prior to or after the coronation is required.

The late queen of the United Kingdom, Queen Elizabeth II is recognised as the High Queen of the Kingdom of Fridgerton.

Titles and Styles
The Monarch of the Kingdom of Fridgerton has various titles and styles they can use. The primary style to be used is either King or Queen or Monarch. However, the Constitution of the Kingdom of Fridgerton grants the Monarch to use alternative styles. The Monarch can also use Titles and Honorifics such as Protector of the Realm.

The Monarch of the Kingdom of Fridgerton also has the right to use any of the titles used by the High Queen of the Kingdom of Fridgerton. Therefore the Monarch can on occasions style themselves as 'King of Malta'.
