The Holstonian Empire (German: Holstonisches Kaiserreich), commonly referred to as Holstonia, is an entity which claims to be an independent sovereign state, but is called a micronation from the perspective of external observers. Founded in the United States, Holstonia declared establishment on 13 January 2023. Holstonia is officially a Christian state, viewing itself as somewhat of a continuation of the German Empire. Imperial German influence has been noted to be quite prevalent both within the government and civilian culture.

Etymology

Holstonia's name is derived from the Holston River, which is 136 miles long, and flows from Kingsport, Tennessee, to Knoxville, Tennessee. Along with its three forks (North Fork, Middle Fork, and South Fork), it comprises a major river system that drains much of southwestern Virginia, northwestern North Carolina, and northeastern Tennessee. It converges with the French Broad River at Knoxville to mark the beginning of the Tennessee River.^[1]

History

Early history

On 29 August 2022, Holstonia was established and declared a kingdom by its first (and only) monarch, CCE, who claimed his residence as Holstonia's first territory. Due to the circumstances in which the micronation was established, a decision was made to not form a governing body, which resulted in CCE having absolute power. This proved to be quite easy and efficient, as over the course of approximately 2 months, Holstonia went from being a kingdom with only one territory, to an empire with a total of three territories.

Modern history

On 13 January 2023, CCE officially reestablished Holstonia as an empire, and made plans to draft a constitution, because he wanted to have some form of government to help make decisions as the Empire grew. By 10 February, a draft was made, and then ratified by CCE (who now held the title of Emperor), and Chris P., who he elected as Chancellor.^[a] On 16 November 2023, CCE began a period of expansion, which started with territory that is now jointly controlled by Holstonia and Cristoria. Due to this joint ownership, it was given the name Cristonia. Since then, two new territories have been annexed. One being parts of the former Republic of Polstowia, and the other being a small section of a city in Germany that was gifted to CCE by a close friend.

Government

Holstonia is a semi-constitutional monarchy ruled by the House of Ehrenfried. While it is officially hereditary, the Imperial Council has the ability to legally appoint the Chancellor as Emperor if there is no successor to the throne. If the Chancellor cannot receive the title, then it is passed on to the next highest-ranking official. CCE currently holds the title of Emperor. He has absolute power, having the ability to disband everything if he so wished. Despite this, he chooses to go along with the Imperial Council, being present at every meeting, helping legislation be passed, and even has the ability to propose legislation of his own. Chris P. currently holds the title of Chancellor, acting as CCE's second-in-command. He is able to help pass legislation within the Imperial Council, and can propose his own legislation. Unlike CCE however, any legislation he proposes can be overruled by a 2/3 vote. Maine currently holds the title of Council Speaker. He is the presiding officer over meetings within the Imperial Council, regularly engaging in debate with other Deputies, and is responsible for presenting the results of debates to the Emperor. The Imperial Council is unicameral, with the House of Deputies being the only House to make it up as a whole. It also is unitary, having supreme legislative control over all Holstonian territories. There is room for approximately 100 Deputies, who perform many administrative and procedural functions to ensure everything goes smoothly.

Foreign relations

Holstonia recognizes both micronations and macronations, as it believes that the end goal should be micronational recognition by all macronations. While certain micronations have been condemned for their actions towards the community, the same cannot be said for macronations. This is due to condemnation going against Holstonia's aforementioned beliefs.
