The Kingdom of Arkaland (Greek: Βασίλειο της Άρκαλαντ, romanised: Vasíleio tis Árkaland, [vaˈsi.li.o tis ˈar.ka.land]) is a micronation located in Rethymno, Crete, Greece.
History
Pre-establishment
Before its establishment, the Kingdom of Arkaland was known as "I.R.C." (Greek: Α.Ρ.Κ.) which stood for "Independend Rethymnian Country" (Greek: Ανεξάρτητο Ρεθυμνιακό Κράτος).
Post-establshment
The Principality of Arkaland was established on 26 January 2023 by self-proclaimed King George I and Viceroy Marios I. Over the first few days of existence, the micronation created its own coat of arms, seal, flag, government, and national anthem. It is also planning to issue banknotes and coins of its own currency, the Arkalandian Drachma, as well as postage stamps.
The name was officially changed on 15 February 2023 by royal decree to Kingdom of Arkaland, with its Greek short name being Hellenified to «Αρκαλανδία» (Arkalandía [ar.ka.lanˈði.a]), which sparked a heated popular debate. As it stands, a few parliamentary figures are against the current official name.
Politics
Government
The King and Field Marshal is the leader of Arkaland. The second-in-command is the Viceroy and the third-in-command are two Counts. The Arkalandian parliament consists of five Lords.
Diplomatic relations
The Kingdom of Arkaland signed its first diplomatic treaty of mutual recognition with the Feud of Tomania, following a meeting between King George I of Arkaland and King Constantine II of Tomania, which ended the war between the two nations, effectively being a peace treaty.
In total, the Kingdom of Arkaland has mutually recognised the following four micronations:
Feud of Tomania
Empire of Imvrassia
Governorate of Græcia (informally on 14 February 2023, formally on 11 May 2023)
Radonian Empire
Arkaland is also a member of the League of Hellenistic Micronations since 25 March 2023.
Economy
Between its establishment on 26 January, and 6 May 2023, Arkaland used the Euro (de facto) and the Arkalandian Drachma (de jure) as its official currencies. On 6 May, the Kingdom of Arkaland reached an agreement with the Governorate of Græcia and was granted the right to use the Græcian Stater as its de jure official currency. The binding agreement does not permit Arkaland to copy or alter the designs of the banknotes and coins printed by the Bank of Græcia and issued by the Græcian mint respectively.
