The Confederation of Hoku, commonly referred to as Hoku, is an entity which claims to be an independent sovereign state, but is called a micronation from the perspective of external observers. Founded in Knoxville, Tennessee on 9 July 2024, it is a successor state to the Democratic Republic of Hoku, which dissolved after the Hokuian Congress voted in favor of a redraft of the micronation's constitution.

Hoku is officially a secularist state, modeling itself after the United States and the freedoms it grants through its constitution, namely, freedom of religion. That being said, Christianity is the most popular religion in Hoku, with 90% of its population practicing it.

Etymology

Hoku's name is derived from the Hawaiian word that means "star". It was thoughtfully chosen for its evocative and universal sound, symbolizing the peace and power of the nation, much like how a star shines brightly and radiates light and positivity.

History

Early history

In early May of 2022, Hoku was founded by River Tipton as the Kingdom of Monnunism, a micronation based around an ideology that attempted to combine monarchism with communism. It lasted until 19 May 2022, when it was renamed as "Hoku" and a socialist government was instated.

Socialist Republic

Established on 19 May 2022, the new Socialist Republic of Hoku quickly allied itself with the Kingdom of Huntia, the Gorthian Federation, and the Kingdom of Cristoria. Hoku would have close relations with Huntia, as River Tipton previously led a Huntian political party centered around the aforementioned ideology of monnunism. However, due to drama over a ban from a Discord server, Hoku and Huntia's relations would become negative. On 27 May 2022, Cristoria officially declared war on Huntia after six days of the two making propaganda about one another, and Hoku, along with a few other of Cristoria's allies, chose to support them. On 27 August, the war ended, resulting in a Cristorian victory. Due to this, Huntia was dissolved and its leader disappeared from the internet. On 8 June 2022, Cristoria founded the Syndicate Nations of Prosperity to combat the threat posed by Gorthia, and war would break out between the two shortly thereafter. Hoku, along with a few other micronations, would join the alliance, solidifying their relations with Cristoria. On 13 June 2023, after a referendum was held by Almendrian officials to determine whether Hoku was to stay or leave the United Socialist Republics, Hoku forcefully left, causing tensions between them and Almendria. These tensions would cease when Almendria's leader offered Hoku a proposal, which was accepted.

Democratic Republic

On 1 November 2023, a decision to finally dissolve the Socialist Republic was made. For months prior, democratic socialism was becoming a popular ideology within Hoku, and after a diplomatic discussion with the leader of Gorthia, the Democratic Republic of Hoku was established. After its establishment, Hoku would enter a period of tranquility, with nothing noteworthy occurring. On 9 July 2024, it was decided that Hoku's constitution needed to be redrafted after a vote was held in Congress. This redraft of the constitution officially dissolved the Democratic Republic and established the Confederation.

Government

Hoku is a confederation of independent states with a central government that is very limited in power. The government itself consists of an Executive Branch led by the President, a Legislative Branch led by Congress, and a Judicial Branch led by the High Court. The President is elected once every four years by citizens of the Provinces, and each vote is counted by Congress.
