The Soviet-Starland Situation was a 'Newsfeed War' between the Union of South London Soviet Socialist Republics and The Kingdom of Starland that took place during the fall of Erusia in July–August 2010. Many outlandish comments were made both by Alex Ulbricht of the USLSSR and Nik Hart of Starland. The conflict was mainly ideologicaly based, it flared up due to the USLSSR's dislike of the Anti-Communist internal policy of Starland.
History
Early Seeds
The seeds of the conflict stem from King Nik's assumption of the Starlander throne in December 2009. When he came to power, Starland was an absolute monarchy with a military presence. There was no constitution, no legislature, and all laws were made by the monarch and Prime Minister. Upon taking the throne, Nik suspended the office of Prime Minister, which it would remain until April 2010, and assumed absolute power. While he gave up some power, writing a constitution and allowing a legislature, he still held a strong grip on power. He banned communism in Starland and, despite a new constitution that put limits on his power, he continued to rule the country absolutely as if it had never happened. He remained heavily involved in Starlander politics and meddling in the affairs of other nations. Many in Starland were afraid to speak out against him for fear of being arrested for treason. The press was heavily monitered by the King and the government, in reality, held very little power.
Erusian General Election and Anti-Communist Sentiment
With the Democratic Party's victory over the communist National Unity Party, the King would continue to praise the victors and chastise the defeated communists. At the time, it was unknown to the King or the micronational world that the country was a puppet state with Robert Lethler pulling the strings. Nevertheless, the King began issuing many anti-communist statements calling it a "virus", "a menace", and "a plague" and voicing his bitter dislike towards the ideology. He fought hard against it, advocating other nations to rise up against their communist governments. Starland became controversial for its support of the Democratic Party, drawing fire from Sandus and other communist and socialist nations. Sandus decreed that "any government which condones the recent election in the Democratic People’s Republic of Erusia will be added immediately to the Counter-Revoutionary State List of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and will have to conduct regular business with the Democratic Guard." The King responded by blacklisting Sandus and later announced he was going to use the Micronational and International Committee for Peace and Democracy to combat communism. This recieived quite alot of criticism and the King would apologize, withdrew his plans, and was later exhiled by vote of the Starland government.
Erusian Civil War
Upon Nik's return, he was met with much criticism. The Starland government was threatening to remove him and abolishing the monarchy. During this time, civil strife was building in Erusia, eventually boiling over to civil war. Nik declared his support for the Democratic Party and condemned the communist takeover. It originally was prepared to declare war on the communists but eventually was abandoned. However, it would lead Starland into a heated verbal exchange with a communist nation and pushed the two to the brink of war.
The Soviet-Starland Situation
With the outbreak of the Erusian Civil War, a few socialist nations declared their support for the rebels such as Sandus and the USLSSR. While Starland relatively ignored the Sandum government, Starland and the USLSSR began exchanging heated words. The King called for a diplomatic embargo on the USLSSR and soon an "Newsfeed War" ensued on the Wiki. The Cold War style conflict saw the capitalist Starland and the communist USLSSR exchanging a heated war of words over the mid-to-late-July timeframe. Both nations mobilized their armed forces, King Nik declared Martial Law in Starland, and the two came very close to declaring war. The war was highly scrutinized by Elytherian Prime Minister, William Danforth (later revealed to be one of many personas of Sebastian Linden), and Nemkahv President, Marka Mejakhansk. Other nations allied with Starland or the USLSSR. The United Provinces Under Chance allied with its Soviet ally while Starland received support from Cliff Island and Dorzhabad. After nearly two weeks, the two nations finally agreed to sit down and conducted talks on the MicroWiki. Since the Erusian Civil War had ended in a victory for the legitimate government, the two decided to bring their hostilities to an end as well. Starland agreed not to place an embargo on the USLSSR, the USLSSR agreed to remove one of the posters but keep one for historical records, and later both sides de-mobilized their troops. A Treaty of Mutual Recognition and Non-Aggression was signed, marking the end of the rivalry, and adding to the conclusion of the Great Ideological Conflict. It was also the first time Starland conducted an agreement with a communist power.
After the Conflict
Soon after the conflict ended, King Nik's image and popularity rapidly declined. Sandus collapsed which Nik marked as a "victory", Robert Lethler revealed his nation was completely fictitious and an experiment, and Nik's recognition of the A1NLF and the National Party of A1 would all be post-cold war events topping the MicroWiki at the end of July. Nik's meddling in A1's affairs would only intensify tension between the MicroWiki community and Starland. Granted, the Royal Government at the time did not see the organization as a problem, they saw recognition as a controversial issue. When Starland erupted in civil war in early August, the king and his government were overthrown. Nik returned to power for a few days before illegally taking over Aspinburgh without even consulting the Royal Government. This draw heavy criticism from within Starland, the community and Aspinburgh's socialist leaders. On August 11, Nik offiicially abdicated and Aspinburgh's socialist majority took power but would later collapse due to political instability. In Starland, it would mark the end of a dictator and the beginning of a new era. Since then, Starland and the USLSSR have conducted friendly talks and, in April 2011, entered into alliance with one another. The USLSSR still remains a socialist state and Starland remains a capitalist nation. However, Starland has gone through much transition. It became a Republic in September 2010, an Empire on March 30, 2011, and Union under a democratic republic in September 2011. Its government is now democratic and adopted a more left-wing views. After Nik's departure, it renounced its recognition of the A1NLF. The former King Nik went on to lead the Starland military before retiring in July 2011. Hart is now the Prime Minister of the Union of Starland and Alex Ulbricht, the President who exchanged words with him in the conflict, still remains President of the USLSSR.
