The Republic of South Maudlandia, conventionally shortened to South Maudlandia, is a micronation based in Antarctica.
History
South Maudlandia was founded on March 13, 2015, by Matthew Phillips, from NSW Australia. The mainland is located south of the Norwegian Antarctic claim, Queen Maud Land. The country was founded on the basis that Norway failed to define a southern limit to their territory, thus leaving it potentially unclaimed. In addition to the mainland territory, the country also annexed Forrester Island, which is administered as an overseas territory.
Nearly a week later, on March 18, 2015, the Autonomous Region of Pannonia was claimed for the Republic. Pannonia was originally a terra nullius known as Siga, on the border between Serbia and Croatia, and owned by neither country due to a border dispute.
On March 21, 2015, South Maudlandia signed the Treaty of Mutual Recognition with the Senatorial Republic of Timeria, making Timeria the first country to recognise South Maudlandia. A similar agreement was signed with the Principality of Imvrassia on March 31, 2015.
Pannonian Crisis and War
On April 13, 2015, the Free Republic of Liberland claimed Pannonia. After ignored attempts at negotiation, the South Maudlandian Government-issued Liberland with an ultimatum. The terms were not complied with, and it was later revealed that Liberland was planning to settle Pannonia. To take preventative measures against this happening, South Maudlandia declared war on Liberland on May 29, 2015.
Government Overthrown
On November 8, 2016, the government of Matthew Phillips was overthrown in a military coup by the South Maudlandia Revolutionary Army. SMRA Commander Jeff Renner was appointed as the interim President. Elections were held April 20, 2017, with President Renner being reelected with 89% of the vote. President Renner's first act was to end all aggressions and relinquish all claims outside of the South Maudlandia mainland. A new constitution was ordered to be drafted and ratified. On November 8, 2018, the South Maudlandian parliament voted in a referendum and it was announced that after his 2nd term ends in 2024, President Renner would step down and assume the ceremonial title of King, but the post of President will remain the highest government office.
Territory
Mainland South Maudlandia consists of all territory from 84°S to the Geographical South Pole, between 19°W and 45°E; and all territory from 84°03'S to the Geographical South Pole, between 19°W and 20°W, as outlined by the Declaration of Statehood.
Politics
South Maudlandia is a nominally democratic state, led by a President. The President functions as both Head of State and Head of Government, primarily due to the tiny population. The current President is Jeff Renner, leader of the South Maudlandia Revolutionary Army Party.
