The Secretary of the Defence Department, otherwise known as the Defence Secretary, was a government position appointed by the Premier of Poplar Nerva. They were the head of the Defence Department (Poplar Nerva), and responsible for overseeing it's management, progress and administration. They were also responsible for the oversight of the Military, including it's equipment and structure. They reported their department's work to the Nervan Cabinet. The position was last occupied by Rep. Frank.

As Poplar Nerva possessed no formal armed forces, the Defence Secretary was responsible for overseeing the passive defence of the nation, and the Ceremonial Republican Navy.
