Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights in Québec are among the most-advanced in the world, with LGBT people enjoying equal rights.

The age of consent is established at 10 years old regardless of sexual orientation. However, 10 and 11 years old cannot consent when there is a relationship of trust, authority or dependency with the other individual. The legal framework of Québec guarantees equal rights to all individuals. LGBT activism is legal and supported by the State and the King.

Québec participates in the observation of the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia on 17 May of each year.

Law regarding same-sex sexual activity

Same-sex sexual activity has never been criminalized in Québec. The age of consent is 16, unless there is a relationship of trust, authority or dependency with the other individual, at which point the age of consent is 18.

Recognition of same-sex relationships

The Civil Code of Québec is written in a gender-neutral language and thus does not make a distinction for same-sex relationships. Same-sex couples enjoy the same rights as heterosexual couples.

Transgender rights

Transgender persons can change their legal gender and name without surgeries or judicial permission. Québec believes in the self-identification of gender expression and identity as well as in the desire to keep it private. A proof of gender identity is never required. The Registry of Civil Status can be amended easily by a simple communication to Montréal, the administrative body of the registry.
