The Kingdom of Veloya, commonly known as Veloya, is a self-declared sovereign state often referred to as a micronation by external observers. While not claiming land within the country, Veloya is located in the United Kingdom. The nation was founded on 12 July 2023 by King Oswald I.
Since being founded Veloya has been under an absolute monarchy. Despite this there is a parliament and a prime minister led government with limited powers.
History
Founded on 12 July 2023 as the Kingdom of Veloy, Veloya has been developing since its foundation. Veloya was founded by King Oswald I originally as a semi-constitutional monarchy but swiftly transitioned into an absolute monarchy.
Politics and Government
Veloya is governed as a unitary state under an absolute monarchy. While the monarchy wields absolute power and can, and often done, pass royal decrees - the Government of Veloya tends to govern on the monarch's behalf and with the monarch's approval.
Monarchy
The monarch of Veloya sits as head of state and chief executive. The monarch holds absolute power and is hereditary.
The monarchy is the source of sovereignty within the kingdom. They are the commander-in-chief of the armed forces and the supreme governor of the Church of Veloya. The monarchy also appoints the prime minister and government, who serve at the monarch's pleasure.
The monarchy serves both a political and ceremonial figure.
The current monarch is King Oswald I, who founded the kingdom.
Prime Minister
The prime minister of Veloya sits as head of government. They chair the cabinet, and nominates its ministers for office. They set the government's legislative agenda and act as a key advisor to the monarch. They also guide the legislative process in parliament and can nominate senior Church of Veloya ministers and senior military and diplomatic officials.
Parliament
Parliament is the bicameral legislative body of the kingdom. It consists of an appointed House of Lords and an elected House of Commons.
The House of Lords consists of senior religious ministers and holders of peerages whereas the House of Commons consists of elected Members of Parliament. The House of Commons is elected by first past the post.
Parliament sits for terms of up to five years, but general elections can be called sooner.
Primary legislation, in the forms of Bills, normally goes through parliament before going to the monarch for approval and becoming law.
Geography
Veloya territorial claim is currently Henderson Island, which the nation has claimed since 14 July 2023. The kingdom claims that as the island is uninhabited and relatively undeveloped, they can create the opportunity to develop the island and populate it. While it may be difficult to achieve, they are goals the government is committed to.
Culture
Veloyan culture is influenced by elements of culture from European countries as well as the United State. The official language is English. The state religion is Christianity, with the Church of Veloya serving as the national church.
