The Prime Minister of Veloya is the head of government in the Kingdom of Veloya. They advise the Monarch on how to exercise some of their power, chairs the cabinet and nominates its ministers. As prime ministers usually hold office based on their ability to command the confidence of the House of Commons, they usually sit as a member of parliament.
The office is currently vacant.
History
The role of prime minister was established on 12 July 2023. It is the oldest non-royal office in Veloya and the second governmental office created after the monarchy.
Power
The prime minister is head of the Government of Valoya. As such, the prime minister leads the Cabinet (the Executive). In addition, the prime minister leads a major political party and generally commands a majority in the House of Commons (the lower house of parliament). As a result of this, the PM wields significant legislative and executive abilities.
In the House of Commons, the prime minister guides the law-making process with the goal of enacting the legislative agenda of their political party. In an executive capacity, the prime minister nominates (and may dismiss) all other Cabinet members and ministers, and co-ordinates the policies and activities of all government departments, and the staff of the Civil Service that support the government's ministers. The prime minister also acts as the public face of His Majesty's Government, both at home and abroad.
Appointment
The PM is appointed at the discretion of the Monarch of Veloya. Prime ministers serve at the monarch's pleasure and can be dismissed by the monarch at any time.
