Gene was a major city in Secundomia located in the state and Socialist Republic of Gravois. Gene was the largest city in the region and served as the capital of both political units. Gene played host not just to the a capitol building, but also a major hotel and served as a tourism hub. Gene thus formed one of the most commercially successful areas in the Republic of Secundomia. Years of political strife and declining economic activity lead to the Fall of Gene in 2016.
History
Foundation
Gene and the surrounding area of Eastern Gravois was purchased by American-Gravois citizens in 1996 as a vacation home. Intense redevelopment in the late 1990s resulted in it becoming a popular tourist destination. In July 2010, government representatives of the fledgling Republic of Secundomia visited the city and declared the foundation of the state of Gravois. As the central city within the area with a consistent population and an established base of operations, Gene was selected to be the capital of the state.
State of Gravois
Gravois and Gene continued to be used by Secundomian and American citizens as a vacation destination. A hub for economic activity, Gene helped play host to Thanksgiving events including the Gravois Football Festival. Gene citizens were known for their political conservatism, but as non-citizens of the country, they were uninvolved in politics while largely approving of the governing Secundomian Conservative Party. However, political concerns began to mount when the August Revolution occurred in East Secundomia, with a revolutionary coalition government lead by the Worker's Party of Secundomia taking the reins of the country.
Decline and Collapse
Gene was largely left untouched by the Worker's Party, with governor Spencer I left to continue managing the state of Gravois. However, economic concerns began to mount as well and the population of Gene considered abandoning the city. In April 2016, the Maoist-Worker's Party of Secundomia seized control of Secundomia and its sister principalities. As a part of a new program to reorganize the country as a federation, the state of Gravois was handed nominally increased political autonomy as the Socialist Republic of Gravois. Gene remained the capital city, however the MWPS intended the state to be run strictly by a single party dictatorship of the proletariat. This incensed the population of Gene, who began plotting ways to depart the republic.
In 2017 residents of Gene disabled FSSR military vessels stationed at the nearby naval base. Soon, both citizens of Gene fled the country and announced plans to sell off the territory to outside actors. FSSR officials were unable to control the city and the entirety of Eastern Gravois was lost.
Demographics
Gene's permanent population was notable in that it was mostly populated by non-Secundomians. Gene consisted of two American citizens. However, Secundomians typically visited the country in large numbers during summer and fall months.
Economy
Gene subsisted mainly off of a tourist economy. It saw most economic activity in the summer months, with travelers seeking the excitement of the nearby Lake of the Ozarks. When Gene was overloaded, the nearby town of Elene or even Stone City in Western Gravois could also house tourists. However, most preferred to stay in the Gene Hotel in South Gene. Furthermore, Gene benefitted from the nearby Gravois National Naval Base and most citizens could be employed helping the naval operations of Secundomia.
