Essen City, formally the Dual District of Essen City, also known as Essen, or just E.C., is the capital city of the Sun Republic. It is located on the interior side of Sierra Vista, south of the Fry district with it's governance opening for the first time in 2011. The city was named after the German city Essen, from which it's official language—Old Duskian—is derived from. As a seat of The Sun Republic's national and international affairs, the city holds important political value in the Kyberian micro national world. It is the largest and most visited city of The Sun Republic.
The Sun Republic's constitution provided for a federal district under the jurisdiction of the Sun Republic national assembly (or congress); therefor the district (minor) is not part of any official territory, state, or otherwise related governing body. The City is divided into two parts, often referred to as Minor and Major, Lesser and Greater, or Essen City Former and Essen City Current. Essen City Major is the only federal district which is allowed by decree of the constitution to rule or govern itself, but it's taxes and other governmental aid programs are determined directly by congress. Essen City Minor is the federal district run solely by congress, and includes a few small buildings (that are not contiguous) and make up the majority of the Sun Republic's houses of governance.
All infrastructure of the Sun Republic begins within Essen City, and a designated point has been described as the nation's point zero. The district is the only federal region in the Sun Republic which utilizes the metric system rather than the standard measurement in Imperial units. Roads, paths, and other methods of transportation all begin at Essen City, and a favorite saying among congressmen is that, "Essen's Roads lead to all but Rome," implying that Essen City itself is a third Rome. The Sun Republic's border distance are measured from the point zero dedicated by the constitution, and distances are calculated using a 360 degree rotating geographical coordinate akin to Latitude and Longitude lines.
