The Armed Forces of Eniarku are the collective military, intelligence, and security forces of the Grand Duchy of Eniarku. The Armed Forces are responsible for both the national defense and domestic law enforcement, as well as the promotion of Eniarku's interests abroad and supporting international peacekeeping efforts. The State Guard functions principally as a land warfare and police branch, and works closely with the General Intelligence Directorate on matters of foreign intelligence activities and domestic security. The commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces is the Eniarkian monarch, Grand Duke Alexander, to whom members swear allegiance, and the military's structure is regulated by the National Security Act of 2024.

History

Historically, Eniarku maintained a standing army whose sole purpose was land-based military operations. The army was the oldest branch of the military, dating back to the period before the establishment of the Republic of Eniarku when several loosely-connected guerrilla groups banded together to create the armed branch of what has now been termed the May Revolution, when this small force ceded small portions of U.S. land in order to create the original republic. When the semi-presidential republic became a communist state in early 2010, the army's first official rank structure was developed, which was also adopted by the single-branch State Military Police established while Eniarku was a state of the North American Confederation.

Upon the dissolution of the NAC, the army was reestablished with the primary purpose of protecting Eniarku's sovereign territory and its citizens. The Interconfederale period saw the division of the army into the general staff and the Special Forces Unit, in addition to the Under-Secretariat of Defense Intelligence,[a] and the absorption of the naval and border guard forces into the general staff. This trend of heavy bureaucratization continued under the government of the Eniarkian Confederation, under which the military was placed under the civilian control of the Federal President and Secretary of State for Defense, who worked together with the general officer-level chief of staff, Secretariat for Homeland Security and National Intelligence, and newly-formed General Intelligence Directorate.

Following the establishment of the kingdom on 5 August 2015, the military was once again reorganized into a standing army and brown-water navy, while the General Intelligence Directorate continued in its role as the national intelligence and security agency. Given the norm of peace that has dominated the MicroWiki sector since the end of the Austenasian Civil War in 2010, both branches of the military had reverted to largely ceremonial functions by the onset of the kingdom's inactivity in early 2018, but the extensive rank structure and bureaucracy of the Ministry of Defense persisted. Upon the reestablishment of the state in May 2024, the National Security Act of 2024 provided for the creation of the State Guard, which subsumed the responsibilities of all previous branches of the Armed Forces,[b] as well as the continuance of the General Intelligence Directorate's role as the grand duchy's sole intelligence and security agency.

Structure

Chapter VI of the 2024 constitution establishes the Armed Forces as the national defense and police contingent of Eniarku, but provides relatively little guidance on the organization thereof, allowing the government to modify the structure as needed. Article 33 vests the sovereign with total authority over the Armed Forces as commander-in-chief, but by convention, executive power over the military is exercised by the grand duke acting through and on the advice of the Council of State as the Crown-in-Council. Currently, the structure of the Armed Forces is governed by the National Security Act of 2024, which consolidated the units of the former kingdom's military into the State Guard and General Intelligence Directorate, the two divisions collectively responsible for royal safety, the state's self-defense, security and policing of Eniarkian territory, and intelligence activities. In additional to these standard duties, high-ranking officers of the State Guard typically serve as aides-de-camp to members of the royal family.

Ranks

The current rank structure of the State Guard was established by the National Security Act of 2024, while the General Intelligence Directorate does not maintain a traditional rank system. The law reserves the rank of colonel for use by the grand duke as commander-in-chief.

General Intelligence Directorate

The General Intelligence Directorate (GID) is the security and intelligence agency of the grand duchy. By law, it is the civilian complement to the State Guard within the Armed Forces, and is made up primarily of non-commissioned intelligence agents and contracted tacticians who conduct clandestine security and intelligence operations and utilize covert warfare techniques in order to protect Eniarku's interests domestically and abroad.

Notes

  1. During this period, each executive secretariat maintained its own intelligence agency to manage intelligence affairs for that specific policy domain.
  2. More specifically, the State Guard functions as Eniarku's land and naval self-defense force, domestic police unit, and royal guard.
