President Hereu called for elections on March 3, 2017. They were the first elections convened after the approval of the Constitution through a referendum in 2018. The new electoral system consisting of 7 seats to be distributed with a single district was also applied for the first time.

Background

They were the first elections convened after the approval of the Constitution through a referendum in 2018.

From these elections, only the Prime Minister would be elected by parliament, since the future president of the republic would be elected through presidential elections.
