The Cabinet of Bastara is the senior decision making body of His Majesty's Government. It is a committee of the Privy Council, and is chaired by the Prime Minister of Bastara. Its members include Secretaries of State and other senior ministers.
Members of the Cabinet are appointed by the Monarch of Bastara on the nomination from the Prime Minister, and are chosen from members of the two houses of the Parliament of Bastara, the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The Cabinet is now made up almost entirely of members of the House of Commons.
The work of the Cabinet is scrutinised by the Shadow Cabinet, which is controlled by the Leader of the Opposition.
History
The cabinet was officially established by the Constitution of Bastara on 9 June 2023. All ministries founded when the cabinet was were formed at the discretion of King Judah I instead of having a constitutional position.
Some non-executive cabinet departments and offices have been created since by royal decrees.
Composition
The Prime Minister nominates the members of the cabinet and attendees of the cabinet.
The Cabinet is a committee of the Privy Council so all cabinet ministers, by virtue of their position, are ex officio privy councillors and are entitled to the style of "The Right Honourable".
Members of the cabinet are constitutionally required to be a member of one of the Houses of Parliament. By constitutional convention, senior ministers come from the House of Commons so they can be held to account.
Importance
Cabinet ministers, like all ministers, are appointed and may be dismissed by the monarch without notice or reason, on the monarch's own will or on the advice of the prime minister.
The prime minister, as the executive head of government, always sits as the chair of the cabinet. They make all nominations for ministerial appointments and may dismiss all ministers. They also set the cabinet's agenda.
The cabinet is the primary decision making body of the executive branch of government in Bastara. The power of the cabinet is dictated by the government's majority in the House of Commons - the larger the majority, the more power the cabinet has.
