The Deputy Prime Minister of Bastara is the official deputy head of government of the Kingdom of Bastara and is a senior position in the Bastaran cabinet, second only to the Prime Minister of Bastara. The office is not always in use, and is sometimes used to denote seniority. Sometimes, they are seen as an equal to the First Secretary of State when both offices are in use.
The office is currently vacant.
Role
As the role of DPM is not always in use it does not have any formally established duties. The office is typically used to denote seniority, however duties can be given to the office by the prime minister based on what is needed at the time. As well as this, the DPM can step in when the prime minister is absent or incapacitated so cannot immediately carry out their own duties - despite this, the DPM doesn't have automatic right of succession to the office of prime minister.
History
The office of deputy prime minister is not one formally established by the constitution, but is established more by convention and practicality. The office was established on 9 June 2023.
Appointment
The deputy prime minister is nominated by the prime minister when a government is formed. Then it is at the discression of the monarch to appoint the officeholder. Like the prime minister, the DPM serves at the monarch's pleasure.
Sometimes a First Secretary of State is appointed instead of or as well as a deputy prime minister.
