Astrud Lake is Kapresh film currently being shot and planned to be released in 2024. It is a historical drama war film dramatizing the Battle of Astrud Lake, and the build up to the battle.

Plot

After a terrorist attack in Wegmat, carried out by a Kapresh citizen, Wegmat declares war on Kapreburg, as they believe the terrorist was deliberately sent by Kapreburg as an act of war. Sir Matthew Hughes, who has just moved to CharriotsVille from Micowi, enters into Charriots Palace with a copy of the declaration of war. Hughes presents this to Jackson I who is gravely concerned, and brings up that it could be a violation of the Treaty of New Albuquerque, however they suggest to hold off talking about it until the rest of the army can be assembled. The issue is brought to a vote in Parliament, where it is unanimously decided to go to war with Wegmat. Eventually Wegmat marches into New Kariba with plans to invade, and the Kapresh Royal Army meets them there. After a long period of fighting, the Kapresh army is drawn back to hiding behind a log, and they decide to charge Wegmat. Hughes and Jackson are both eliminated quickly, meaning the end of the battle. Both of them are overcome with shame.

Production

Background

Jackson I had always liked war films and wanted to make one about Kapreburg. He had been inspired by films such as The Alamo and Cromwell, and originally had the idea to make a movie based on the Battle of Whynofly. After hanging out one day in late 2022, Jackson I and Matthew Hughes came up with the idea to make a film based off of Astrud Lake, because a large blizzard had just occurred and the snow reminded them of how it looked during the actual battle.

Filming

Production began in late 2022. The original plan was to film in Ryan's Woods after the large winter storm that had just affected Kapreburg. When they began filming, however, only two shots were able to be taken before the camera stopped working due to the cold. The two decided this was for the better so they had more time to write the script and plan the filming. In January of 2023 a better script was written and filming began soon after. This time they filmed in on location, in New Kariba. This time, they only got a few shots done before the sun set. Filming resumed on 1 February 2023, and about 5 minutes worth of film were shot. More filming is planned later in February.

Music

The soundtrack for the film is composed of a mix of other film soundtracks, and classical pieces. Most notably, Mars, the Bringer of War by Gustav Holst is heard before and during the fighting.

Accuracy

The film is highly dramatized, mainly for entertainment value, but also is meant to portray the Kapresh soldiers at Astrud Lake as noble martyrs. In the beginning of the film, Matthew Hughes drives to Charriot's Palace, where Jackson I is awaiting him, anticipating "big news". Jackson is handed a folder containing a document, which is a copy of a declaration of war from Wegmat. This interaction never happened. In reality, Jackson I was informed about the declaration of war by a Discord message. The discussion they have is grounded in reality, however. They discuss possible offenses, or what they could do in the case that Wegmat attacks first. Hughes ends the conversation stating that the perpetrator of the attack wants to help Jackson I with Weg intelligence. Just like before, Jackson I was directly messaged by the perpetrator on Discord.

The battle scene opens with the Hughes and Jackson crossing the isthmus between the two lakes of New Kariba, and meeting Cole Baird near the hill in the north of the colony. There, Baird offers Jackson that he will leave and cause no conflict if Kapreburg willingly gave the colony to Wegmat. Jackson refuses stating he “wants a fight”. This interaction did really happen, but the exact wording is dramatized. The fighting is based in reality but mostly dramatized.
