Homestuck micronations
A form of themed micronationalism is micronations whose culture is based on the fandom of Homestuck, an Internet fiction series originally published from 13 April 13 2009 to 13 April 2016.
Background
Homestuck is an Internet fiction series initially published through daily updates from 2009 to 2016, since followed by the Hiveswap series of computer games and a controversial continuation of the main story through the Homestuck Epilogues (2019) and Homestuck^2: Beyond Canon (2019–present), as well as various prominent fan comics, particularly Vast Error. The story of Homestuck centres on an immersive game called Sburb where the players attempt to create a new universe. The characters are primarily either humans or a race of aliens called trolls, from the planet Alternia; the Hiveswap series focuses on Alternian society.
Since the release of [S] Cascade in 2011, Homestuck developed an unusually large and intense fandom, known for its sprawling size and creation of fan works but also its internal conflict and alleged toxicity. The Province of Skaia—a Homestuck-themed province of the St.Charlian Federation of Koss—existed during this initial golden age of the fandom, whilst the later Republic of Glastieve purported to draw conscious inspiration from it. Although the fandom lost ground to the emerging Undertale fandom in 2015–16 and lost momentum when the original comic was completed, the culture survived and experienced a renaissance with the publication of the controversial Epilogues and the COVID-19 lockdown, attracting new fans into the 2020s who had not been there for the original comic.
Particularly in its later phase, the Homestuck fandom has been closely associated with the queer and neurodivergent communities. An association with Homestuck was part of the mythos of Beti de Quadri, a fictional sockpuppet persona with an exaggeratedly 'woke' personality created by Lyra of Little Skovaji in 2021.
Examples
Explicitly Homestuck-themed micronations
- Province of Skaia (fl. 2013): A province of the St.Charlian Federation of Koss, governed by Leon Frajmund. The name Skaia is a reference to a planet at the centre of the Incipisphere, a dimension to which the characters of Homestuck are transported to play the game Sburb. The province's capital city was called Prospit, one of two dreaming moons to which characters travel in their sleep; Prospit was the moon associated with more optimistic personalities.
- Good and Holy Quadripartite Kingdom (2021): Quadria was a micronation created by Beti de Quadrie, a fictional persona controlled by Lyra of Little Skovaji. Although Beti was a false persona, Quadria did function as a Discord micronation with several real citizens. Its culture was supposed to be based on Homestuck and Vocaloid. Its national flag depicts the haemospectrum of blood colours from the series' troll society, arranged to look like a pride flag. The persona of Beti also self-described as "Homestuck trash" and stated they were bullied out of the Twitter-based Homestuck fandom.
Micronations influenced by the Homestuck fandom
- Republic of Yusienia (2020–present): Aurora Twinkle has stated that Yusienia was "inspired by homestuck related things", amongst other influences, during its creation.
- The Celestial Commonwealth of the Ethereal Glastieven Folkdom (2017–present): Homestuck is the "National Webcomic" of Glastieve and "Homestuck Day" on 13 April is one of the twelve national feasts included in the ceremonial calendar. Homestuck fan culture has also sometimes been a cultural force outside of these events—for example, there was a movement in 2017 to have Homestuck-style typing quirks enshrined in law as an acceptable substitute for Standard English in formal documents.
