The Despotate of Vlasynia (or Vlasynian Despotate), more commonly known as Vlasynia, is a self-declared de facto independent state with little to no international/UN recognition (it is de jure considered part of Romania and Turkey); Because of that, it is often referred to as a micronation. Vlasynia is located predominantly in Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe, as well as in Western Asia, on the Anatolian Peninsula. The vast majority of its territories are enclaved within Romania, with the exception of the Çankay Autonomous Beylik, which is surrounded on all sides by the Republic of Turkey, and Horse Island, an unincorporated territory which shares very short river borders with both Moldova and Ukraine on the Danube river. It has a predominantly temperate-continental climate. The micronation hosts a total land area of 16 square kilometres (6.17 square miles) and an unevenly-distributed population of 11 people, not including an additional 3 citizens living in Romania, outside Vlasynia's borders. Its capital and largest city population-wise is the Divellis Municipality (shortened as Divellis), and other urban areas include: Lipăneşti, Milcoiu City, Moineşti, Çankay, as well as uninhabited settlements, like: Alexandru I. Cuza (largest city by land area). Fort Canis and Fort Miro. The entire population identifies themselves as Eastern Orthodox Christians and are native speakers of Romanian, a Romance language and one of the three official languages, alongside Vlasynian and Latin.

Vlasynia is the succesor state to the Empire of Enok, having declared its independence from Romania on 21 December 2017. However alliances and diplomatic relations had been initiated 5 days prior. Its first and current Despot is Denis I, of House Vlăsceanu, having ruled the nation since its inception, with an interruption between 21 July 2018 and 23 August 2018, during which he was President of Vlasynia-Dartiria. Over the years it has been expanding, as a result of Despot Denis' expansionist policy, but on some occasions it also gave "concessions" (territories and claims returned to the parent country), which were either not needed anymore or were deemed "unrealistic" by the Despot. On 01 June 2018 Vlasynia gave away all of its initial territorial claims, starting the S.W.A.B Era, which lasted until 02 July 2018, when a new powerbase and capital were carved up in Bucharest, Romania. In the meantime, on 21 June 2018, Vlasynia united with another Romanian micronation, the Dartirian Empire, to form the State Union/Empire of Vlasynia-Dartiria, a federal diarchy within which the Vlasynian and Dartirian monarchies still existed as federal subjects. That changed one month later, on 21 July, when Vlasynia-Dartiria became a unitary dual-presidential republic and, as a result, both monarchies were dissolved and replaced by a political union lead by two Presidents. It only lasted one month and two days until 23 August 2019, when Dartiria's secession from the United Republic would cause its end. Through this act Vlasynia was restored as an independent nation and the Vlasynian monarchy was resurrected with it. Following Vlasynia-Dartiria's dissolution, the Despotate entered the Protectorate Era by establishing a series of protectorates in Bucharest. During this time the Divellian Union was founded, which would later be replaced by the Union of Vlasynian States, on 20 July 2019. On 09 September 2019 all protectorates and several territories would eventually be returned to Romania as a result of the Realistic Reforms, ending the Protectorate Era and starting the ongoing Post-Reforms Era. Vlasynia has been a founding member of the Reformed Intermicronational Confederation (since 03 July 2019), the Union of Vlasynian States (since 20 July 2019) and the League of Romanian Micronations (since 21 March 2018), as well as a member of the North-Western Alliance (since 23 June 2018) and the Union of Bucharester Countries (since 23 August 2018). The Despotate has also been a full member of the Grand Unified Micronational since 17 June 2020.

Vlasynia sees itself as the current incarnation of the Kingdom of Romania.

Etymology

The name "Vlasynia" is composed of two parts: "Vlas" and "-ynia". The term "Vlas" comes from the Vlasceanu Dynasty, the current ruling dynasty in Vlasynia, while the meaning of the suffix "-ynia" is not a precise one. The term "Vlăsceanu" derives from the toponymic term "County Vlaşca" and the toponymic suffix "-eanu". In Romanian the letter "y" from the English version is replaced by an "i" (Vlasinia), while in Vlasynian the letter "u" is actually used (Vlasunía).

History

Before Vlasynia

On 21 June 2018 Denis Vlăsceanu disestablished his first micronation, the Empire of Enok, after which he temporarily gave up on micronationalism. However, that would change when in November 2017 Denis discovered the existence of an abandoned village, called Alexandru I. Cuza, located about 30 km east of Bucharest, in the Călărași County of Romania. Once the discovery was made, he immediately declared the desire of owning the village, as well as the territories around it. At the beginning of December 2017, he had the idea of creating another micronation in the area, and so he started making preparations. On 15 December Denis assumed the pseudonym "Mihai Vlăsiu" and planned for a suitable day of establishing his new nation. He wanted the national day to be on a special day in December, apart from Christmas Eve, Christmas or New Year, and as such he decided to set it on 21 December, which corresponds with the winter solstice. After all preparations had been made, on the night of 20 December 2017, he wrote the Official Declaration of Independence and the next day he signed it, officially making Vlasynia independent from Romania.

Pre-June Era

After achieving de facto independence from Romania, Vlasynia gradually started evolving its diplomatic reputation, as well as its national identity and simbolism.

It adopted the Denisian Divellion (the Despot's personal emblem) as the Coat of Arms and also changed its flag twice: on 08 January 2018 and on 09 January 2018, respectively. The nation's motto became: "Vivat Magna Vlasinia!", which is the Latin translation of the phrase "Long live Great Vlasynia!", while the new national anthem adopted the same tune as the anthem of the former Kingdom of Romania, but without lyrics. Despot Denis also created a specifically Vlasynian boy's name: Ested, which he himself would adopt as his new pseudonym, alongside his real last name, Vlăsceanu, between 09 January 2018 and early September of the same year.

At the same time it initiated diplomatic relations with several micronations, including: New Rizalia, Alimia, Egan and Ticronvidia (then known as Titania). Together they put the basis for the League of Micronations and Denis was elected President for a 1 year term, between 08 January 2018 and 08 January 2019. On 21 March 2018 Vlasynia would go on to establish the League of Romanian Micronations, alongside the Republic of Libertia, with Despot Denis I of Vlasynia and President Petru Crăciunoiu of Libertia becoming President and Vice-President of the L.R.M, respectively.

During this era Vlasynia also expanded its borders in early April of 2018 by annexing the Cuzan Parcels, right next to the Mainland, kickstarting Despot Denis' expansionist policy.

The Vlasynian Declaration of Independence. It contains outdated information, like the Despot's name being "Mihai Vlăsiu", instead of Denis Vlăsceanu or the Dynasty's name being "Vlăsiu", instead of Vlăsceanu, but is nonetheless valid.

S.W.A.B Era

On 1 June 2018, Despot Denis, together with his father, visited Alexandru I. Cuza and his other claimed territories for the first time. To his disappointment, he found out that a group of people have been legally owning the area for quite some time. Because of that, he wouldn't have been able to properly assert his control, and so he left. Later that day he officially abandoned all of his claims over the village of Alexandru I. Cuza and the nearby territories and, as a result, Vlasynia was left with no mainland territory or capital. This event started the S.W.A.B Era ("Soul Without A Body") (Romanian: Era "Spirit Fără Corp").

The S.W.A.B Era would continue until 02 July 2018, when Despot Denis went to the Angels' Island/Morii Lake Island (Romanian: Insula Îngerilor/Insula Lacul Morii) and carved up a new power base in the middle of the island, setting his new capital in the settlement of Enok (nowadays Fort Canis).

Vlasynia-Dartiria Era and the Vlasynian Colonial Empire

On 21 June 2018, while the S.W.A.B Era was still going on, Despot Denis I and Co-Emperor Sweyn Hardeknud of another Romanian micronation: the Dartirian Empire agreed to unite their nations into one, thus the State Union (Empire) of Vlasynia-Dartiria was born. As a result, Vlasynia became a federal subject of the larger state, with Denis still being Despot of Vlasynia. Also both Denis and Sweyn became the leaders of the Federal Central Government, assuming the titles of Emperors.

On 21 July 2018/99 AGU, exactly one month after its first establishment, Vlasynia-Dartiria replaced its federal system with a centralized one, made the transition from a monarchy to a democratic republic and changed its name to: "United Republic of Vlasynia-Dartiria". As a result, Vlasynia and Dartiria officially united their lands and thus, stopped being federal subjects and also stopped being governed individually by Denis and Sweyn, respectively, since they both assumed the title of "Presidents".

On 23 August 2018 99 AGU, due to internal disagreements of multiple natures, the leaders of Dartiria (Andrei Rusu and Sweyn Hardeknud) decided to split themselves and their reformed nation (the Revolutionary Republic of Dartiria) from the United Republic, thus ending Vlasynia-Dartiria's two-months-and-two-days existence and restoring the Despotate of Vlasynia as an independent nation.

Protectorate Era

On 26 August 2018/99 AGU, Vlasynia occupied and annexed a portion of the Romanian town of Moineşti, establishing the Moineşti Autonomous Commune. Immediately after the fact, Denis was sent an ultimatum by the Emperor of a local micronation called the Dada Empire. Emperor Sergiu I of Dada told him to hand over the newly-acquired land or face war. Denis chose the latter. The ensuing conflict would be known as the Vlasyno-Dada War. After just 5 minutes of fighting, however, the war was won by Vlasynia and Dada became a Vlasynian puppet state until its dissolution on 30 November 2018/99 AGU.

On 30 August 2018/99 AGU, a municipality named Deleni City (which would later become Divellis) was established, centred around Denis' residence. Afterwards, he moved Vlasynia's Capital from Enok City to Deleni City, so he could better administrate his country from home. As a result, Enok City was downgraded to a regular settlement and was renamed to "Fort Canis". At the same time, however, it became the new District Capital of the Bucharest and Ilfov Territories District.

On 01 September 2018/99 AGU, as a result of a treaty signed with several other Bucharester micronations, Vlasynia gained a large amount of land in Bucharest, with the Lacul Morii, Ghencea and Dobroeşti Provinces becoming part of the Bucharest and Ilfov Territories District. This event was known as "The September Gains". On the same day, the protectorates of Tei and Paque were established.

Afterwards, throughout the next year, Vlasynia kept expanding either directly, by expanding its own territory, or indirectly, by incorporating more and more land into its subject states. During this time, Despot Denis started to make more and more ambitious claims, like areas with hundreds or even thousands of inhabitants, which had no idea of Vlasynia's existence. As a result of these initiatives, the Divellian Union, and later, the Union of Vlasynian States were established on 21 January 2019/100 AGU and 20 July 2019/100 AGU, respectively, in order to extend Vlasynian hegemony as much as possible.

Post-Reforms Era

On 09 September 2019/100 AGU, Despot Denis enacted a series of reforms, collectively known as: "The Realistic Reforms" (Romanian: "Reformele Realiste"), with the intention of realistically organizing Vlasynia's controlled land, population and citizens. The Reforms consisted of the Municipalities of Platan, Bucşeneşti and almost all of Divellis, as well as large portions of the Moineşti and Greenfield Auonomous Municipalities, Lipăneşti City and Milcoiu City having had their sovereignty officially ceded from Vlasynia to Romania. As a result, Vlasynia lost about 1.76 km2 of land in total and almost all of the 8880 people that had previously been living inside the nation's borders. Despite this, the Reforms were ultimately beneficial and necessary, since none of the 8880 aforementioned residents had citizenship or were even aware of Vlasynia's existence. After the whole ordeal, it was revealed that Vlasynia's total population was 11 people.

Flag and coat of arms

The Vlasynian and Romanian State Flags hoisted in Divellis, Vlasynia, as a symbol of the bond between the two nations

The Vlasynian flag has two blue bands, one at the top and the other one at the bottom of the flag, a large black band in the middle of the flag and two yellow bands, each one between the black band and the upper blue band, respectively the lower blue band. Also. in the middle sits the Coat of Arms of the Vlăsceanu Dynasty.

The top blue band stands for the Vlasynian sky, the bottom one stands for the rivers, seas and oceans close to the nation. The yellow bands symbolize a bright future for the nation and its people. The black band was taken from the color scheme of the Vlăsceanu Coat of Arms. Also, in the middle of the flag there is the Coat of Arms of the Vlăsceanu Family and it symbolizes House Vlăsceanu (and more specifically, Denis) ruling Vlasynia.

The flag was initially conceived to have the same colours as Romania's flag, despite the fact that Vlasynia's flag has had different shades of red, yellow and blue. When it was changed on 24 October 2018, the red band in the middle was recoloured to black, in order to represent the influence of the Vlăsceanu family.

It has been redesigned four times since its creation. The first time was on 8 January 2018, when the Denisian Divellion was first introduced, alongside darker shades of red, yellow and blue. The proportion of the flag was also changed. The second time was on 9 January 2017, when the initial shades of red, yellow and blue were restored, and the proportions of the bands was again modified. The banner, however, was kept (despite suffering minor changes). The third time was on 24 October 2018, when the central red band was replaced by a black band, the ratio of the flag was changed from 5:9 to 2:3 and the Denisian Divellion was replaced by the Coat of Arms of the Vlăsceanu Family. The fourth time was on 09 March 2020, when the proportions of the horizontal bands were slightly modified, the shade of yellow was changed to a more golden-like aspect and the Coat of Arms also suffered minor changes. On this date the proportions and measurements of all the elements on the Vlasynian flag were standardized for the first time.

On 05 June 2020, the State Flag of Vlasynia was first hoisted, alongside the State Flag of Romania, in the nation's capital, Divellis.

Administrative divisions

The Vlasynian State is comprised of multiple territories, all of them being enclaved within Romania, with the exception of the Çankay Autonomous Beylik, which is surrounded on all sides by the Republic of Turkey. The current administrative-territorial system was established on 29 March 2020, with a major amendment to it published on 31 March 2020.

There are two main types of administrative-territorial divisions: Provinces and Municipalities, which can be autonomous or otherwise. Each province is further split into Districts and Settlements, the latter being of four types: cities, communes, villages and forts. There is also a third type, the Military Bases, which are not submitted to the jurisdiction of any existing Province or Municipality and are autonomously governed by the Lord Commanders of the respective branch of the Armed Forces, only answering to the Despot.

There previously used to be another type of administrative-territorial division: the Commune. It was exactly like a Municipality in all aspects but name. The only example of a Commune was the Moineşti Autonomous Commune, established on 26 August 2018. This type of unit, however, ceased to exist when the aforementioned Moineşti Autonomous Commune was reorganised into the Moineşti Autonomous Municipality on 31 December 2018.
