The Republic of Theria, commonly known as Theria (/θɛrɪɑː/) (Swedish: Republiken Theria) (Anadl: Ʒerinæþ Þerijā) is a self declared de facto unrecognised nation founded by President O’Sullivan and President Oosterman, Theria classifies itself as an independent nation but to outsiders it is classified as a Micronation. Theria is located on the continent of North America in the New England region of the United States. Currently occupying 5 small areas inside the US state of Massachusetts as well as 1 island within the Boston Harbor Islands and a group of rock land near South Georgia Island in the South Atlantic Ocean. Bordering Massachusetts and the Atlantic Ocean. Its total claimed size is 0.13 mi2. Theria's capital is the hamlet of Súll with a population of 3 (1 permanent resident and 2 temporary residents) The whole population is 19 as of 2023 with 5 living in Theridian territory.

Etymology

The name "Theria" comes from the Greek word for Beast, "Θηρίο". The prefix "-ia" means "land of". So, the name Theria indirectly means land of beasts. The Republic of Theria is not named after or related to the naming of Therians or the Theria in taxonomy.

Flag of Theria

The flag of Theria, also titled the Continuance of Life flag was created some time after the foundation of Theria. Each color of the flag means something. The top yellow band of the flag represents light, the sun, and happiness. The middle blue shade band of the flag represents a stream of water between light and dark. Finally the bottom black band represents darkness, the night, and determination.

History

A Fresh Start

13 January 2022, around the time the founder and first president of Theria dissolved their past micronation they led, the Republic of Kalibia. They knew they had to go bigger and fully go through with micronationalism. So, they worked with the now President, Oosterman to form the Republic of Theria. A nation sought to create friendships and peace between other nations as well as promote religious freedom and human rights.

Slavtria Concerns on Theridian Flag

In October 2022 the Republic of Slavtria had concerns that Theria had stolen & changed their flag. This was not true, the leaders of Theria had not heard of Slavtria during the creation of their flag, and as of now the concerns were cleared up.

ANAM and UNEM

On 30 November 2022 Theria along with several other nations created ANAM. Agreement of North American Micronations. The founding micronations were Theria, Reektby, Dilland, and Firensia. ANAM was created for trading and peace across the continent.

On 6 May 2023, the Republic of Theria had officially joined UNEM, and became the 12th official member. A day after, the Republic of Theria sold the Agreement of North American Micronations to the United New England Micronations making the United New England Micronations Alliance of North American Micronations.

Declaration of Independence

Theridian Declaration of Independence.

On 25 July 2023 the President Oosterman finished writing the Theridian Declaration of Independence. Therefore ratifying Theria's existence as an independent nation. The signed declaration was entirely written by him but visually slightly tweaked by President O'Sullivan. It explains how all claimed Theridian territory is independent from the United States as well as the United Kingdom including: All claimed territory from the South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands and the Massachusetts claimed territory.

Annexation of Slate Island

On 2 September 2023, President O'Sullivan and Leader James O'Sullivan of Súll planned to travel to an island within the Boston Harbor Islands named Slate Island with the plan to annex the island into the rule of Theria. After entering the boat, President O'Sullivan raised the flag of Theria on a handheld flagpole they bought months before. With everything ready, the two of them set out towards Slate. Once arrived, Leader James O'Sullivan anchored the boat and the two of them stepped foot onto the island. President O'Sullivan then took a handheld flag of Theria and placed it onto the island while also declaring the island now part of Theria. They then both took some photos and headed back towards Súll.

Documentation Act of 2023

The Theridian Documentation Act of 2023 is a impending act in which any national event is to be documented in a national archive. The act was announced on 8 November 2023 and has so far been accepted by 2 of the 5 members of the Theridian Leader Council. This act will be beneficial to keeping the history and name of Theria remembered.

Government and Politics

The Republic of Theria is a Democratic-Diarchy. A Democratic-Diarchy is a form of government where there are 2 diarchs or presidents of the nation. Every 5 years, citizens will vote for 2 candidates that become the new diarchs, also called presidents. The presidents are allowed to run as long as they would like unless voted off.

Heads of state

President O'Sullivan and President Oosterman are the heads of state, also known as the presidents or diarchs. The presidents along with the Theridian Leader Council are the ones who make and pass laws throughout the nation. The presidents are allowed to be in rule for five years until the citizens can vote. The next election takes place in 2027.

Environment

Flora

The Republic of Theria is home to many native plant species. Some such are both coniferous and broadleaf trees, such as the maple and pine. The majority of the ground is covered in grass, occasionally split up with flowers and bushes. Invasive species, deforestation, and wildfires are not issues in Theria as of 2023. Most flora retreats back into the soil during the winter season and regrows in the spring, following a yearly basis. New plants are sometimes imported from Massachusetts for decorative purposes, and do not usually leave the housing buildings. Plants also serve a significant purpose in a citizen's diet. Some things eaten are foods such as berries, grains, vegetables, and other plants. They have to be imported, however, because Theria does not have any farms of their own.

Fauna

Massachusetts Territory

There are also multiple species of native animals to Theria. The city of Kaliba is closely located to a forested meadow which hosts as a home for many kinds of wildlife. The most common to see are birds. The national animal of Theria, the crow, is a frequent sight in Theridian skies. Other kinds of birds are new world sparrows, blue jays, red-tailed hawks, american robins, chickadees, ospreys, turkeys, cardinals, seagulls, catbirds, grackles, and mourning doves. Another common sight in Theria are gray squirrels, which are small tree-dwelling rodents with bushy tails. They often raid bird feeders and eat seeds and nuts for food. Larger animals that wander out of the meadow are white-tailed deer, red foxes, gray foxes, coyotes, striped skunks, raccoons, groundhogs, eastern cottontail rabbits, and opossums. The occasional reptile and amphibian are also native. The garter snake, snapping turtle, frog, or salamander are all native creatures. Theria also borders the ocean, so some small shallow saltwater fish such as the minnow are endemic species. Some domestic animals such as dogs or cats also occasionally enter Theridian territory.

Livian Island

Livian Island, being close to Antarctica, has a variety of unique marine animals. Some are fur seals and king penguins, as seen on the coat of arms, as well as a number of birds such as the skua and albatross. There are also macaroni penguins, elephant seals, and Antarctic prions.

Invasive Species

Theria has 2 invasive species. Those being European Starlings and House Sparrows. Both of which were brought by early colonists to the continent from Europe. They are both legal to kill and trap.

Theridian National Parks

Theridian National Parks Logo
Latswell National Park

Theridian National Parks is a branch of the government based on preserving and protecting the environment. Despite the name, they protect animals everywhere in Theria, not just in parks. There is only one national park right now, which is located in Latswadia. It is called Latswell National Park, and is a refuge for wildlife occupying half of Latswadia. It was formerly used as a playing field for sports, but soon after the bordering school closed it became unoccupied and was taken in by Theria. Latswell was declared a national park on 24 March 2023. It is illegal to hunt any species in Latswell, as it is a protected area. It is home to many birds and sometimes deer or coyotes. Species that are protected by Theridian National Parks and are illegal to hunt no matter what territory you are in are ospreys, hawks, fur seals, elephant seals, penguins, and albatrosses. These species are under protection by the government and are either endangered, have been previously endangered and are making a comeback, or at the risk of being endangered (vulnerable, threatened).

Geography and Climate

Theridian Weather Watch

Theridian Weather Watch Logo

The Theridian Weather Watch, or TWW, is a government-runned weather agency focused on documenting and tracking weather in Theria. It was formed on 15 September 2023, right before the events of Hurricane Lee. It names storms, tracks storms, and reports damages that said storms have done. It uses a list of names that are updated yearly to name any extreme weather events. Any non-extreme but still dangerous weather events are named a color and a letter. It starts with Red A and goes through the colors in rainbow order first and then the letters in alphabetical order. So the last storm is Violet Z before repeating.

Natural Disasters

Natural disasters are not common in Theria, but they do still happen. The capital city of Súll is prone to minor flooding as it is on the coast of the Atlantic. Hurricanes have also occurred but are very uncommon and have not done any major damage to any buildings in the area. The most common would probably be heat waves. They usually occur in the summer months and can bring possible drought. Heat waves in Theria are relatively mild compared to other areas, with temperatures of around 90 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Tornado of 2023

On August 18th 2023, a small tornado touched down near Theridian territory. It never entered the country, but the surrounding storm caused heavy rain and winds in the area. No significant damages were reported.

Massachusetts Territory

Image of Livian Island provided by Google Earth

The Massachusetts Territory of Theria borders both the Atlantic Ocean and the US State of Massachusetts, hence the name. Theria has a 0.02 mi² wide (0.05179976 km²) water border. The city of Súll borders the coast, and features a rocky drop off to a small sandy beach. The other areas are landlocked. Some areas are flat, such as Latswadia, and others have hills and dips, such as Súll's beaches. There are not any notable landforms.

Livian Island is a small island located near South Georgia Island in the South Atlantic Ocean. It is primarily made of rock, with not much vegetation or landform. There have not been any settlements by humans and is only home to marine animals.

Currency

Theria uses its own unique currency called the Krýna (Krina). The krýna takes inspiration from Nordic languages, the word Krýna comes from the word for the Icelandic Króna and replaces the ó with ý. Theria also uses a centesimal subdivision of the Krýna called the Ör. The Ör takes inspiration from the Norwegian and Danish centesimal subdivisions Øre. The currency symbol for the Krýna is ⅄ and the currency symbol for the Eris is ⴴ.

Krýnas

The Krýna, Krina (Alternative Spelling) is the de jure official currency of Theria. It takes the form of a paper banknote. The currency symbol is ⅄. The Krýnas consist of ⅄1, ⅄5, ⅄10, ⅄15, ⅄20, ⅄50, and ⅄100.

Krýna banknote.

Ör

An Ör (formerly known as an Eris) is a hypothetical centesimal subdivision of the Theridian Krýna. The current coins are in the works and do not exist physically yet.
