The Secretary of State for Defence, sometimes known as the Defence Secretary, is a senior Minister of the Crown in the Government of Tanaau with overall charge and responsibility for the Ministry of Defence. As a senior minister, the defence secretary is a member of the Cabinet of Tanaau.

Appointment
The defence secretary is appointed by and serves at the monarch's pleasure. By convention, they are appointed on the advice and nomination of the prime minister. Usually, a former serviceman is appointed to the office to ensure the government is capable of creating effective defence policy and provide successful oversight of the armed forces.
