The Kingdom of Tanaau, commonly just Tanaau, is a self-declared sovereign state commonly known as a micronation by external observers. Founded on 17 November 2023, Tanaau is a European micronation under a constitutional monarchy. Tanaau is a Christian micronation.

Tanaau is located in the United Kingdom and has been partially inspired by the British political system. It claims a small, uninhabited, European island. Tanaau has been under a monarchy since its establishment, with the monarch being a symbol of national and political unity.

History

Tanaau was established on 17 November 2023, under the guise of founding father and first monarch - King Colin I. The constitution was written and ratified quickly afterwards. With the ratification of the constitution, the government structure was swiftly determined - with the establishment of a number of government ministries, offices, departments and agencies to allow a government to be able to efficiently function once formed.

On 18 November 2023 the Church of Tanaau was founded, swiftly followed by the great officerships of state on 19 November 2023. Further development took place, with the adoption of the Tanaauan flag on 29 November 2023.

Government and Politics

Tanaau is a unitary state under a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system. The monarchy of Tanaau serves as head of state, prime minister as head of government, and parliament as the bicameral legislature.

Monarch

The monarchy of Tanaau is the highest national office in and hereditary head of state of Tanaau. The monarch is titled as "King of Tanaau" or "Queen of Tanaau" depending on the sex of the reigning monarch.

While the monarchy is constitutional, the constitution vests all executive power in Tanaau in the reigning monarch. The constitution stipulates that the monarch has the sole power to promulgate and ratify laws, the monarch appoints all offices of state including all judges. The monarch is also commander-in-chief of the armed forces, commissions all officers, and makes all senior military appointments. The monarch appoints all members of the House of Lords, may dissolve the House of Commons and call general elections, and appoint and dismiss the government.

The monarchy is typically seen as a ceremonial role - with the monarch typically acting in accordance with this, but has the powers to be a significant political and military figure in Tanaau.

Prime Minister

The prime minister of Tanaau is the kingdom's head of government. They are appointed by the monarch and serve at their pleasure. The prime minister chairs the cabinet and nominates its ministers for office. The prime minister nominates a number of other national offices. Usually the prime minister is appointed from the House of Commons, based on who can command its confidence, but the monarch has the constitutional power to appoint any individual they wish to the office - regardless of them being a member of either house of parliament or not.

The prime ministry is the most powerful non-royal office in Tanaau.

Parliament

The parliament of Tanaau is the bicameral legislative body of Tanaau and contains two of three legislative powers of the kingdom - all three being the monarch, House of Lords and House of Commons.

The House of Lords is the unelected upper house of parliament. It is appointed, consisting of members Tanaau's noble class as well as the senior-most bishops and archbishops of the Church of Tanaau. The House of Lords may also become the High Court of Justice by royal decree.

The House of Commons is the elected lower house of parliament. It consists of members elected to represent single-member constituencies. The senior-most government ministers, including the prime minister, usually originate from the house.

Both houses are presided over by their own speaker of the house who are appointed by the monarch.

Members of either house, and the monarch, may propose legislation. Money bills have to originate from the House of Commons. Bills have to pass with a simple majority in both houses and receive the monarch's assent to become law.

Judiciary

Justice in Tanaau is carried out in the monarch's name by the judiciary. The monarch is also constitutionally permitted to act as a judge.

The highest national court is the Supreme Court of Tanaau, which is chaired by the Chief Justice. It handles criminal, civil, appellate and constitutional cases. It is the only Tanaauan court which can make binding legal decisions with regards to violations of the constitution.

By decree of the monarch, the House of Lords may become the High Court of Justice in trials of high crimes such as high treason. In which case, the Speaker of the House of Lords presides.

Courts inferior to the Supreme Court and High Court of Justice may be established by parliament and all judges in Tanaau are appointed by the monarch.

Armed Forces

The armed forces of Tanaau are the military forces of Tanaau. They defend the nation and aim to protect national interest and represent them at home and abroad.

The armed forces consists of three branches - the Tanaauan Army, Royal Tanaauan Air Force, and Royal Tanaauan Navy. The Corps of Royal Marines, while de jure a part of the Royal Tanaauan Navy, acts as an autonomous corps of the navy and de facto its own branch.

The monarch is commander-in-chief of the armed forces and the chief of the defence staff serves as the professional head.

Administrative Divisions

Tanaau is a unitary state. Despite this, parliament is given the constitutional right to devolve its powers to sub-national bodies such as constituent countries. Counties may also be established under the ceremonial leadership of a lord lieutenant - who represents the monarch in each county, as well as a high sheriff who represents judicial and policing affairs in each county.

Culture

Tanaauan culture originates from British culture. English is the official language of Tanaau, and Christianity is the national religion. The Church of Tanaau is the official church of the state. Karate is endorsed as the national sport and roast chicken as the national dish.

The national anthem is called "Tanaau the Voices".
