History
Following the establishment of the State of Norton in July 2021, the presidency was established. Rafe Hargreaves was elected by his peers to be the first president.
The president was originally established as head of state and government, with the prime minister as his deputy. This form of government continued until February 2022, when the Prime Minister became head of government. The President remained chief executive, as the state of Norton transitioned to a dual-executive government.
At the end of May 2022, Rafe Hargreaves announced the abolition of the republic, in place for a monarchy. The presidency was dissolved, and the office of King took its place. Rafe Hargraves became King Alexander.
In July 2023, King Alexander abdicated, and soon the monarchy was abolished. The Nortonian Republic was declared, and the Presidency was re-created. Rafe Hargreaves became President again.
In November 2023, the People's Democratic National Party of Norton successfully attempted a coup against the prime minister and his government. The Premiership was subsequently abolished, and the President became both head of state and government for the first time in a year and a half. The office of Vice President was created as the President’s deputy.
