The President of Montagne, officially the President of the Republic of Montagne, serves as the ceremonial head of state of the Republic of Montagne. The President also serves as the commander-in-chief of the Montagnan Armed Forces. The President ranks first in the Order of National Precedence of Montagne and is widely considered to be the most constitutionally important politician in Montagne.
Montagne, being a federal parliamentary republic, means the President is elected every three months by the citizens of Montagne and appointed by the House of Commons.
Election
The President is formally elected to a three-month term through the first past the post electoral system. The incumbent President may stand for re-election to another three year term, however may not stand for re-election for a fifth term, until a gap of one term has been left. In the event of a vacancy of the office (by death, resignation, or deposition by a majority vote of the Parliament), the Presidential Line of Succession is initiated.
Qualifications
The following qualifications shall be followed for one to be elected as the President:
- Only a Montagnan Citizen may be elected.
- Only a registered member of a political party may be elected.
The Constitution provides that a citizen is not eligible for election to the Presidency if:
- The citizen has been declared ineligible by the Supreme Court.
- The citizen holds views that contradict the Constitution of the State of Montagne.
Oath
The President takes the oath of office as follows:
“"I (Name) do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the State of Montagne, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the State of Montagne."

The President's full style and title in English is "His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Montagne”.
Powers and functions
In foreign affairs:
- Accrediting and receiving diplomatic functionaries.
- Ratifying international treaties upon authorization of Parliament
- Declaring a state of war as decided by Parliament.
In parliamentary affairs:
- Nominating and appointing Members to the House of Nobles
- Calling both Houses of Parliament into the inaugural session and dissolving them.
- Calling elections and fixing the date for the first meeting of the new Houses (as advised by the Prime Minister).
In legislative matters:
- Authorizing the presentation of proposed governmental bills to Parliament.
- Signing into law the bills approved in Parliament.
- Remanding to the Chambers (with an explanation) and asking for reconsideration of a bill (permitted once per bill).
- Calling referendums (as advised by the Prime Minister).
In executive matters and as to official protocol:
- Naming the Prime Minister of Montagne and appointing Cabinet ministers on the advice of the prime minister.
- Accepting the oath of the government.
- Receiving the resignation of a government
- Dissolving a Government.
- Issuing Presidential Decrees - which must then be immediately debated in Parliament.
- Naming certain high state functionaries.
- Presiding over the Supreme Defense Council and serving as the Supreme Commander in Chief of the armed forces.
In judicial matters:
- Presiding over the Superior Judicial Council - a simply ceremonial court (as advised by the Chief Justice)
- Naming five members (including a Chief Justice) of the Supreme Constitutional Court of Montagne.
- Granting honours, chivalric orders, national awards, pardons and commutations.
