The President of Gerway, internally known as the President of the Republic, is the executive head of state of the Republic of Gerway and commander-in-chief of the armed forces. It is the highest political office in the republic as well as the oldest. The president appoints the chancellor and the cabinet and also has some legislative abilities.
History
The presidency is the oldest Gerwayan office and the oldest political office in the republic. It was established on 29 April 2023.
Role and Powers
The president is given certain powers and roles from the constitution, including:
- Appointing the Chancellor and other Ministers
- Accepting a Government's Resignation
- Calling and Dissolving Parliament
- Calling Parliamentary Elections
- Declaring States of Siege and Emergency
- Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces
- Assenting to or Vetoing Bills Passed by Parliament
In states of emergency the constitution permits the president to hold significant power stating that "the president may take all necessary steps to restore and maintain public order and safety". The president is also granted the ability to rule by decree, which can make some governments who ask the president to do this more regularly more presidential in nature.
Election
The president is elected by direct election. Candidates are nominated for election by their political party and are required to get an absolute majority to win the presidency. If no candidate achieves the required majority then the lowest scoring candidate has their candidacy terminated and it goes through to a second round, where the candidate who achieves the required majority wins.
