The Northern Republic (German: Die Nördliche Republik) was a territorial micronation in North America, landlocked by the United States of America. The Northern Republic was established as a parliamentary, constitutional monarchy in late July 2011, moving away from a federal republic. It has claimed 0.41 square kilometres of land in southwestern Pennsylvania, which consists of a small neighbourhood. Alexander Holmsofen was the monarch. As of January 10, 2012, the Republic has disbanded. The Democratic Republic of New America has been named as the successor state.
History
The origins of the Northern Republic can be traced back to January 25, 2011. The area was originally created as the Heugel Republic. It soon disappeared due to inactivity, at which time the founders of the Northern Republic claimed this land. The specifics, such as the government, official languages, etc. were decided on May 11, 2011. As of May 14, a coat of arms is being created by the government.
On July 16, 2011, the Northern Republic, along with the Sakasaria Technocratic Federation, started a search for extraterrestrial life, utilizing BOINC. This program was ended in late July when Sakasaria ended their BOINC program.
In late July, the government was reformed into a parliamentary constitutional monarchy. A new national anthem is being written and a coat of arms is being developed. A new flag was also approved during this time. A territory will be secured by having the owners sign off the rights for a temporary time (about two to four years). The Northern Republic also has plans to build its own infrastructure from scratch, due to its location and uniqueness.
On August 28, 2011, the Government formed the Royal Navy, the first defense force of the Northern Republic. Grand Admiral Patrick Conlon II leads the defense force. With the creation of the Royal Navy, the Republic expanded its claims to include the large, nearby, man-made lake and some land that leads to it. These claims are not considered sovereign and will not be included in official land area statistics.
On September 5, 2011, the Republic changed its official languages from English and Swedish to English and German. This was due to the fact that more of the population speaks German than Swedish, and its ease of ability to learn being higher than that of Swedish. The Government also hopes that it will help promote the use of the secondary official language.
On September 20, 2011, a new territory was claimed by the Northern Republic, which includes the Chief Arbiter's small neighbourhood. The Government has noted that the territory may expand in the future to include different provinces. The new territory has an area of 0.31 square kilometres. Border signs and flags have not yet been placed as of September 20, 2011. The military sector that housed the Royal Army has disbanded; it has been handed back to the United States after the government decided that the Royal Navy would no longer be useful due to the location of the newly-claimed territory. A coronation ceremony will be held in the Republic on a date that has yet to be determined. It will be posted on the Internet through YouTube and possibly broadcasted live.
On October 25, 2011, the Northern Republic was accepted into the Grand Unified Micronational as a full member.
As of January 10, 2012, the Republic has disbanded. The Democratic Republic of New America has been named as the successor state.
Government & Politics
The government of the Northern Republic was a parliamentary constitutional monarchy. This came into effect in late July, ending the federal republic. The president, Alex Holmsofen, was made king. Patrick Conlon was designated prime minister, and Nik Hamilton was designated chief arbiter.
Foreign relations were available to all micronations that meet the four requirements of the Montevideo Convention and are aiming for autonomy or sovereignty. Relations could be be requested on the talk page for the MicroWiki user northernrepublic. The Northern Republic had relations with the following nations:
