The National Guard Bureau (NGB) is the federal agency responsible for the administration of the National Guard. It is a joint function of the Department of Defence. The Bureau, along with the National Guard itself, was established on 13 May 2023.
History
The NGB was established was established by President Luke Knight on 13 May 2023 as part of armed forces development introduced alongside his intelligence services developments. It was also recognised that states may want to have their own more devolved military forces which the national guard can, to some extent, provide.
Leadership
The NGB is managed by the Chief of the National Guard Bureau who is also the highest ranking officer in the National Guard, the head of the National Guard and the NGB. They are assisted by the Vice Chief of the NGB.
The Chief and Vice Chief are both appointed by the president. Like other military branch chiefs, they are appointed on the advice and consent of the senate.
Both the chief and vice chief are senior UF Army or UF Air Force officers from the National Guard who have served a certain amount of time as active duty.
