History
The office of National Guard Chief was established on 13 May 2023, with the formation of the national guard bureau. It is the oldest office within the national guard directly.
Appointment
The chief is nominated for appointment by the President from any eligible National Guard officers holding the rank of major general or above, who also meets the requirements for the position as determined by Defence Minister and the Chief of Defence Staff, under the advice and/or recommendation from their respective state governors. The nominee must be confirmed via majority vote from the United Federation Senate. The chief serves at the pleasure of the President. By convention, the Chief is appointed as a four-star general in the UF Army or UF Air Force, serving as a reserve officer on active duty.
Eligibility
To be eligible for office, nominees need to be a federally recognised commissioned officer who has served at least 10 years of federally recognized active duty in the National Guard; the Army National Guard or the Air National Guard. However, exceptions can be made for officers who have been recognised to have outstanding service.
