The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) is the presiding officer of the United Federation Chief of Staffs Committee and the uniformed officer in charge of the United Federation Armed Forces. The CDS is the highest ranking and most senior military officer in the United Federation Armed Forces and principal military advisor to the president and the minister of defence.

The CDS convenes the meetings and coordinates the efforts of the Chiefs of Staff Committee, an advisory body within the Department of Defence consisting of the Chief and Vice Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of Army Staff, the Chief of Air Staff, the Chief of Naval Staff, the Chief of Space Staff, the Chief of Coast Staff and the Commandant of the Marine Corps as well as the Chief of the National Guard Bureau.

Organisation and Assistants

The principal deputy to the CDS is the Vice Chief of Defence Staff (VCDS), who is also typically a three or four star general or admiral. The chief is also aided by the Director of Defence Staff.

Appointment and Rank

The CDS can be nominated from any of the branches of the regular components of the armed forces and is appointed by the president on the nomination of the Defence Minister. Appointees also need to achieve senate confirmation and approval. The chief serves at the president's pleasure. Usually the CDS is appointed as a four-star general or admiral if they haven't achieved the rank already.
