The Insurgency in Westavia was a social, political and religious conflict between Westavians and the Juniperian Government. The conflict saw three stages of fighting across roughly 3 months. The conflict is also known as the Holy Insurgency amongst Islamic militants who fought there (Arabic: تمرد وستافيا). There was very little press coverage in the Juniperian media due to the lack of coverage from the Vicar-General of Westavia, Matthew, Duke of Jean and Perry. In September of 2023, Sean Villevoiche released a document outlining the Insurgency, clearing up communications about the insurgency.

Background

The insurgency has roots in the long lasting conflicts between Adlerians and Westavians, many anti-Westavians and anti-Adlerians have exchanged positions since the establishment of Juniperia. Major interactions came after the assumption of Athena II of the Adlerian House of Athen to the throne of Westavia and the establishment of the Adlerian-ruled Kingdom of Westavia. Although reforms were made, largely to avoid such an insurgency, they mostly failed.
The primary purpose of the insurgency, in the view of the Westavians was to restore Westavia as an Empire ruling over all of its former territories, and to promulgate a Westavian to its throne. Contenders to the throne included George Celenic and his brother, but more popular as a contender was Prince Andreas of Westenbourg, close relative of Prince Edward (not Celenic) and of Shahan I. The complex lineage of succession was further complexified by the status of the House of Shahan which had emigrated out of Irvine. Therefore, Westavian revivalists agreed to promulgate Prince Andreas to the throne in the event of an insurgent victory.
The initial plan of the insurgency was to carry out a coup to either convince or depose Matthew, Duke of Jean and Perry as Vicar-General, then to invade the home territories of Juniperia. It was expected that Laskaridia would fall relatively quick, however Portola, Northwood, Auran and Artenople being Alderian strongholds would be among the last to fall. Edward Celenic and Joseph Antogen, notable Westavian commandants generalized this plan to focus all militant strength on Laskaridia and Dessau-Bonn, then to utilize local frustrations to capture the surrounding territories. In late December, it was purported by Celenic that Juniperian forced would be incapable of driving into Westavian heartlands. This was proven false after the protests in Quail Hill and Jamboree were suppressed within a few hours. Juniperian forces under the Lord Krishna conducted a raid on a wooden house believed to be housing insurgent supplies. These military provocations signaled that Celenic's plan would not work.
Notable anti-Westavians include Eric Xie and Artin Kordavi, who stated he would enjoy the prospect of a "Westavian clearing," in which Westavians would be cleared from the realm. Notable anti-Juniperians include George Celenic, who engaged in arguments with Kordavi frequently and gave rallies about anti-Juniperianism. His brother Edward Celenic, although more moderate, is a subscriber of the Westavian revivalist movement. Nicholas Bluebonn and Conner Alder were all notable anti-Juniperians as well.

One of the first formal exchanged between both sides was a letter from Matthew Wu to George Celenic, interim leader of the An Reilistes, the letter asked Celenic to withdraw comments he made about the Westavian authorities, Celenic replied that he will only do so once Athena II is deposed.
